An interesting discussion to have; I think a lot of people point to Lovecraft for helping give a definition of weird fiction as a mode or genre, but even HPL leaned on works like The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction (1917) by Dorothy Scarborough and The Tale of Terror (1921) by Edith Birkhead.
