With all of these recent felt #earthquakes, many people are asking "does this mean the big one is coming?". These earthquakes are not connected - some are shallow, some deep, all are on different faults and even different tectonic plates. They are far from the locked subduction fault. So no... βš’οΈπŸ§ͺ

Worried that the recent earthquakes in Victoria are a sign that the "Big One" is coming? It's unlikely, according to @seos-uvic.bsky.social professor Lucinda Leonard. "There's no reason to think that changes in these stresses will trigger the next 'Big One'." vancouversun.com/news/bc-eart...

#earthquake just now in #yyj Victoria

That was quite the shake here in #Victoria πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ at 05:02 PT. M4.6 near Orcas Island, 45 km ENE from Victoria and 70 km from Vancouver. Felt all across southwest BC and northwest WA. Details and to report shaking: www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/recent/2025/...

Feb. 28, 2001 (at 10:54 a.m.), a damaging M6.8 earthquake rocked Seattle, rolled Victoria and was felt across southern BC and the #PacificNorthwest. This was a deep #earthquake in the subducting Juan de Fuca plate. See links to presentations and a Q+A session at: pnsn.org/blog/2021/02... βš’οΈπŸ§ͺ

Did you know that in southwestern #BritishColumbia, tectonic plates are moving at about the same speed your fingernails grow and that we get 3 types of #earthquakes here? Every day, small earthquakes are recorded (1000+/year). For details, see: www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/pprs-pprp/pu... βš’οΈπŸ§ͺ
