Yeah, he does a really good job of clarifying exactly why the JAG stuff is so important for a reader who might not otherwise piece together exactly what is happening.

The expert emphasized: “law is a tool, not a neutral mechanism for expecting the maintenance or protection of something with a legal right to exist.” These guys don’t care if something is illegal. They know there will be court cases. They’re counting on the cost & disruption to make them moot. (3)

Orban’s people weaponized law & regulations to ground a campaign of persecution & pressure against academics, media, and knowledge producers. By the time what they had done against CEU was found to be illegal, it was too late. Why? Because chaos & disruption are expensive & time consuming. (2)

And before someone gets in here going on about low foundation or nonprofit overhead, are they running labs? Do they have incredibly specific containment concerns for biomedical & agricultural research? Are they providing infrastructure to support the students who learn by participating in research?

Just in case folks are tempted to interpret last night’s message press conference as an old man’s rambling or spitballing, we should recall this, from almost a year ago.

I mean, Kushner laid it out in that interview at Harvard. The US control bit is newish but the cartoon character dollar sign eyes at “waterfront property” have been there.

Fed source to me: “It’s like a bank heist and the bank is America. Not really being hyperbolic to say control of those systems would allow an extremely fast collapse of the economy. Imagine it’s a plumbing system and someone takes a sledgehammer to the central pipe.”

I need a bat signal for an Americanist who studies the presidency. @juliaazari.bsky.social? It seems that Trump can't legally use an EO to override the CHIPS and Science Act, but what happens when NSF complies with the EO rather than the law? Does anyone have standing to sue?

That's what I got from the article? Trump doesn't care about the law, but Congress, or some members of Congress, may have some feelings about a law they passed being overridden by the Executive. I'd love a lawyer's perspective.
