This is significant. Farage is meeting Musk’s preconditions for bankrolling Reform UK.

What does the data say about Putin's widely-ridiculed claim, that Russia only invaded Ukraine because of Ukraine's move towards NATO membership? It looks like there wasn't much appetite in Ukraine for NATO membership, until *after* the Russians started invading them...

Something that will live in my head rent-free forever is a liberated Ukrainian prisoner of war talking about her experience of torture & saying "one thing though, thank god, they didn't rape us. They raped the boys, for sure, but not us girls."

This is how the Russian military treats occupied countries, with “torture in a widespread and systematic manner.” This is what Europeans know awaits much of the continent, if Putin is allowed to grab part of Ukraine, and move on. This is why he must be stopped.

What did Churchill have to say, the last time the Russian army posed a threat to Europe? *checks bookcase*

Quoted in City AM, along with the Clubland Substack. “Given the huge demand for private members’ clubs, people imagine that they have a licence to print money. But that’s not the case…90% of clubs end up closing down. It’s been that way for centuries.” www.cityam.com/after-allbri...

Writing is often a lonely task. (Which is ironic, because I write so often about the history of sociability...) But it's thoroughly worthwhile, when you read a book review as lovely as this, which really understands what you were trying to say. www.linkedin.com/pulse/book-r...

American readers may want to pre-order my new book, ‘London Clubland: A Companion for the Curious’, at the publication price of £25.00 (about $31.00) before any UK/US tariffs are imposed. Publication date is 15th May in the UK, 26th August in the USA. www.amazon.co.uk/London-Clubl...

Just LOL'd at @seththevoz.bsky.social's comment about the arms race between the Reform & the Carlton. Reminded me of Patrick Leigh Fermor's whimsy of the Peloponnesian War as a conflict between the Pall Mall clubs.

‘Behind Closed Doors’ quoted in today’s Observer coverage of the Reform UK fundraiser at Oswald’s.

Something I'm trying to do with the Clubland Substack: any major news which hasn't already been the subject of a standalone post/analysis, I include in my monthly round-up of news about private members' clubs worldwide. It's a good way to keep track of it all. clubland.substack.com/p/january-cl...

I still believe that the biggest threat to world peace is David Owen.

This is why you don't design curricula around "jobs of the future". We can't predict the future but we do know what general skills and knowledge will be valuable whatever job you do.

It's a pity that UK universities are now in no state to take advantage of this.

I've started reading Behind Closed Doors which wears its learning lightly & is very funny @seththevoz.bsky.social

Six months - and 50 posts - of the Clubland Substack. Here’s a short summary of the ground covered so far. open.substack.com/pub/clubland...

Your reminder that Donald Trump's grandfather, Frederick Trump, was an illegal migrant to the USA in 1885; while Melania Knauss (now Trump) first entered the USA in 1996 on a travel visa, illegally taking at least 10 paid modelling jobs on that visa. All verifiable facts.

Society launches new Open Access book series on 'History and Contemporary Society' bit.ly/4aqCiG4 With @cambridgeup.bsky.social, we invite proposals for our new series: 'Elements in History and Contemporary Society' to explore the value and use of history in contemporary society and culture 1/2 👇

The Clubland Substack is nothing if not versatile. Here, I stray into anthropology and behavioural economics, and look at whether Dunbar's Number applies, in asking the question 'What is the "right" size for a club?' clubland.substack.com/p/what-is-th...

Delighted to receive the latest edition of ‘Finest Hour’, the journal of the International Churchill Society, for the special issue marking 150 years since his birth, containing my article on Churchill and his clubs.

If you know me at all, you probably know that I spend a lot of time in private members' clubs, and a lot of time in Portugal, especially Porto. So here's a look at the clubs of Porto... clubland.substack.com/p/the-clubs-...

In his memoirs, Jimmy Carter wrote that he thought the President of Panama, General Omar Torrijos, looked like Humphrey Bogart. I see what he meant.

If I take one thing home from the Star Trek original series episode 'Space Seed', it's the idea that in the 23rd century, the galaxy will be explored by starships which will each have at least one historian on board.

One of the great delights of January is getting the annual copy of Transactions of the Royal Historical Society thudding onto my desk. This year’s is packed with goodies, including a rather colourful piece by Andrew Lownie documenting how the British state spied on him, as an inquisitive historian.
