Another lovely morning just got better when I found this Glossy Ibis on Pilning Wetland. On the first pool north of the building.

A glorious morning, a 14 metre spring tide, frost, clearing mist and blue sky. Skylarks singing, Lapwings displaying, plenty of Wildfowl on the river and wetland. A bonus first Avocet of the year on Pilning Wetland as well.

The last few days have had some new wildfowl appearing, 3 Pochard yesterday (sadly now rare here), a gruesome Egyptian Goose today (just about annual here) and just now; Common Scoters heading over giving their distinctive night call heading East/inland.

A late afternoon visit to the north end of Northwick Warth/Aust Warth failed to produce any owls for me but a Barn Owl was seen briefly after my departure. This new pool at Cake Pill (the creek that flows past the flood gates) is screaming out for a good bird to be found, hopefully this year.

Wheatear! New Passage. Today. @severnsidebirds.bsky.social @bristolbirding.bsky.social

A surprise male Wheatear at Northwick Warth found by Derek Clarke on Northwick Warth this morning. My earliest sighting.

An early morning dog (7 am) walk produced a lovely Barn Owl hunting the salt marsh at Severn Beach. A scarce bird here with none reported anywhere on the patch some years .

With the tide being out this morning, grim murky weather and many day trippers on the sea wall, I decided to visit the Orchard Pools area of Severn Beach for the first time this year. I was rewarded with my 1st patch Marsh Tit since my last record in the early 1980's. The joys of Patch birding.

The birds remain much of the same here on the Severnside Patch with plenty of Wigeon, Teal and Lapwings but a Brent Goose at Severn Beach yesterday & Pilning Wetland today, 4 Pintail on the wetland 2 days ago show a few birds are moving. On the downside my recent highest Dunlin count is just three.

A windy day at Severn Beach thanks to Storm Eowyn produced at least 70 Kittiwakes. They did the usual thing; float up to the Prince of Wales M4 bridge, fly back down river, land on the river, float up river with the tide & repeat for over an hour. Always nice to see the first Kits of the year.

Not quite what I was expecting to see at Severn Beach this morning; a Guillemot swimming along the shore line in flat calm, windless conditions. Perhaps it was just lost in the mist. A nice patch year tick.

I have been hanging sliced apples on my garden Crab apple tree since December. I have had combinations of males and females daily but today there were 4 present at the same time, 2 males and 2 females. They were driving one of the Robins crazy as it thinks the food is all for itself.

A freezing visit to Pilning Wetland produced my first Pochard of the year on the Grebe pond (sadly this is now only just about an annual visitor to our patch). There were 100's of Teal, Wigeon and Lapwings, 50+ Shoveler, 35+ Gadwall and 80+ Curlew, some showy Snipe and a lone Bar-tailed Godwit.

Happy new year to all fellow patch birders wherever your patch is, happy vismigging, early mornings, foul weather birding, but most of all enjoy all the birds, stay healthy and enjoy 2025.

Well that's it for the year on the Severnside Patch. I saw 175 of the record 190 species reported. All of them were great to see but highlights were White-tailed Eagle, Lesser Yellowlegs, Temminck's Stint and White-rumped Sandpiper. Looking forward to seeing my first of anything in the morning. 1/2

A few more snaps of the 2 Bewick's Swans from this morning. A bird I hoped to find this month but becoming less frequent here each year. The telephoto range of my Nikon P1000 still surprises me.

The 190th species for the year recorded on the patch this morning. A new record year. Two lovely Bewick's Swans on Pilning Wetland that haven't found Slimbridge yet.

Another or the same Pied Crow? ?10 counties since 2018. Are the BOU accessing these?

Each day is much of the same here at the moment on the Severnside Patch. Plenty of Wigeon, Teal, Gadwall, Shoveler, Dunlin, Redshank, Curlew and Oystercatchers with Water Rails squealing almost everywhere. Windy weather forecast later this week might produce a few sea birds.

The 1st Leach's Petrel of the year was seen at Severn Beach late afternoon. I managed to see it through other's scopes as it glided off down river and 20 minutes later the same or another appeared near the sea wall. No pics today. Here are some of my Severn Beach pics from December 2006.

I would like you, please, to sign this petition to ban driven grouse shooting. The first under a Labour government. 10k signatures gets a government response, 100k a debate in Westminster parliament. UK residents & UK citizens living abroad can sign. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

The long staying Spotted Redshank gave close views on Pilning Wetland this afternoon. It favours the first pool on the right from New Passage.

My 2nd trip of the day to New Passage at dusk produced much of same as this morning; 100's of Geese, Wigeon and Teal with Shoveler, Gadwall, a single drake Pochard, 200 Lapwing, 110 Curlew, 250 Dunlin and the Spotted Redshank. Everything except the Geese were flushed by this presumed escaped falcon.

A 5 goose species day. I missed the 2 White-fronted Geese and a Brent goose from Aust Services but while I was scanning the 400+ Canada Goose flock from New Passage found 2 Barnacle & 36 Greylag Geese. The whole flock was flushed by 2 large birds: a White Stork being chased by an angry Grey Heron.

The gloomy weather produced another good vismig day particularly at Severnview services, the premier motorway hotspot with now at least 155 species seen/from there. Also on the patch; Spotted Redshank & Brent Goose, Water Pipits, Short-eared Owls, Avocets etc. www.severnsidebirds.co.uk/page334.html

I have trouble adding videos directly to Bluesky (file too large) so here is a link to the Spotted Redshank on Youtube www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KAh...
