🗞️ Today in Government Officials Who Don't Understand how Data Processing Works (And Are Allowing it to be Used to Harm Americans). Let's take a look at the claim "data doesn't lie", shall we? 🧵

The public comment period for changing passports to misgender trans people is open. Please take a moment to let them know that you do not support that change.

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too. EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them. Here’s our shareable guide ⬇️: (pt. 1/2)

Another fun tidbit: the hull planks of this vessel were joined together with mortise and tenon joints. It would have been very fiddly and time consuming to build. Luckily for the builders, that effort was not wasted as this ship had a very long use life for a boat!

We’ve become used to right wingers throwing tantrums every time black people are on tv in something everyone is watching (the olympics, superbowl, ect) but it’s actually fucking weird and we shouldn’t act like that’s a normal reaction

Living through *hand waving* all this has made it really easy to understand and empathize with damnatio memoriae. Like if we get through this, think how healing it would feel to do some damnatio memoriae.

Heads up American #archaeologists there is a joint resolution proposing to end the protections of Marine Archaelogical Resources. Time to call your elected reps!

TX State Leg Then: our DEI ban doesn't impact curriculum; professors have academic freedom to teach their courses! TX State Leg Now: this bill will "prohibit universities from offering certificates, degrees or courses in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer studies or DEI."

A teaching in a thread

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Figured we could all use some "expeller of evil" in our timelines. I'm sure they were all very good dogs

This is how I got through last week. I am by no means an artist (as is quite clear with my stick figure drawings), but making this brought me a small measure of peace. I'm hoping this assignment will give my students the same opportunity.

Et tu, Chronicle of Higher Education? REALLY?

Testing out a new activity for my asynchronous online intro archaeology course -- Experimental Archaeology Cartoons! Students pick an article from a list and then create a cartoon series to present it to their classmates (posted to a discussion board).

I’ve lost track of #archaeology podcasts. Which ones include interviews of book authors? Drop any recommendations here. Query prompted by marketing questionnaire for upcoming “Archaeology of American Protests” book but happy to podcast list that covers other regions/time periods.

Proud to share snapshots from my most recent #DataViz project “Wake Up – The Tragedy of US School Shootings”, capturing the data and stories behind more than 52 years of violence in US schools. Project: alhadaqa.com/project/wake... #WakeUp #DataVisualization #GunViolence #DataJournalism

Easy to believe we've entered dystopia when I have 4 inches of snow in my Houston backyard

As Trump takes office & pledges mass deportations, here is a shareable film series written *by immigrants for immigrants* on how to safely defend against ICE. The first of four: 🚨If ICE is outside your door, don’t panic. Don’t open the door. Ask to see a warrant. ICE can’t enter w/o one. Part 1:

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter from a Birmingham Jail 16 Apr 1963 "My Dear Fellow Clergymen: While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer criticism of my work and ideas.

Lemur-like primates would cling and leap through the forests of North America about 50 mya. This particular cousin of ours is Smilodectes, not an ancestor but a member of an early primate group called adapiforms. The forward-facing eyes and grasping hands are key adaptations to life in the trees 🧪
