ICYMI: UW System Pres. Rothman and UW-Madison Chancellor Mnookin joined more than 30 Wisconsin health and biotech groups to urge the state's Congressional Delegation to support NIH funding. The proposed cap on the indirect reimbursement rate would result in a $65 million annual loss to UW-Madison.

I think it's important to reach out to your own community and explain what the funding cuts mean in practice.

What a different world we could have.

Judge Crawford: I think that is exactly why Elon Musk is spending millions of dollars on these phony attack ads against me and trying to get Brad Schimel on the Supreme Court. We need to have a Wisconsin Supreme Court that’s working for the people of Wisconsin, not one that is working for Elon Musk

I don’t think it’s widely appreciated yet just how much COVID disinformation is an assault on democracy. COVID conspiracy theories were the best recruitment tool for the far right in decades. They’ve left us damaged—undermined faith in our governing institutions, science, and modern medicine.

Doubleplusgood. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

No. That Democratic senators didn’t grill him on it doesn’t mean the plan to mass infect unvaccinated people under and 70 to reach herd immunity in 3-6 months was successful and wise.

America, the land of the narcissists and the home of the sociopaths. apnews.com/article/trum...

"In the 19th century, it was incredibly dangerous to be a child. As of 1900, about 18 percent, or nearly one in five, American children died before their fifth birthday. ..." What changed? Better sanitation, medical advances - and vaccines. www.vox.com/health/40268...

It is sad when you need to spread doubt. This is double-speak, political manoeuvring to pretend that openness to declare potential conflicts of interest means transparency and not actual conflict of interest. Many disclosures represent perceived rather than actual conflicts. 1/4

The other day a friend told me that someone we both know had yelled at her, "You voted for Kamala? Do you think you're still young enough to need an abortion?" (She's 50.) The comment is so revealing. These people think that only their very own personal interests matter. What a selfish country.

Standing up for science in Philly!

CDC nominee Dave Weldon is a notorious anti-vaxxer. Hearings start Thursday. @defendpublichealth.bsky.social is making a push to Senators starting on Monday. If your organization can help please DM. @ezralevin.bsky.social @leahgreenberg.bsky.social @5calls.org www.washingtonpost.com/health/2024/...

A reminder on the day of @standupforscience.bsky.social that Trump picked Jay Bhattacharya to run NIH, and Bhattacharya will destroy NIH and with it US science. Please just read his writing. It’s very bad. He’s been picked to kill the agency from within.

RFK Jr. is forgetting the corollary, “What kills us makes us weaker.”

Please don’t even come here and suggest that RFK Jr. has little to do with the measles outbreak in TX. He has been spreading misinformation about MMR vaccine specifically for two decades. He is the reason that many parents don’t vaccinate their kids. And he still refuses to strongly promote MMR.

@engber.bsky.social on how Bhattacharya's crusade for "academic freedom" & "scientific debate" clash w his acquiescence to Trump admin's attacks on scientific research as he prepares to lead NIH. Former NIH head Varmus: "this guy should not be in my old office.” www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

Myths spread by contrarian doctors to minimize COVID are now being recycled to minimize measles. The anti-vaccine circle is complete. My latest for SBM. sciencebasedmedicine.org/newagain/

At Jay Bhattacharya’s confirmation hearing for NIH Director, he showed that he will be a very obedient, unthinking servant to Trump and RFK Jr. He kept insisting that more studies need to be done on the nonexistent link between vaccines and autism. He thinks more data will convince anti-vaxxers.

Essential reporting here. We have previously noted Bhattacharya’s ties to PANDA. Give this a read. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

China eliminated H7N9 influenza virus by bird vaccination…

Thread on Jay Bhattacharya's weak scientific bona fides. Let's look at his CV. Too many scientists are saying "Bhattacharya has NIH funding, he can't be that bad." No. He wants revenge. He hasn't gotten an NIH grant since 2017, and the two grants then were only as a stats/econ consultant.

🧪 Volunteers launched RestoredCDC.org, emulating the CDC site as it was pre-Trump to restore public health data. They aim to fix broken links and add tools to track changes over time. 🩺 🛟

Jay Bhattacharya is pushing lab leak lies and arguing that NIH helped fund the research that created the pandemic. He’s a lying sack of you know what.

NEW: The NIH has begun terminating grants for active projects studying gender identity, DEI, environmental justice, climate change, among other topics. At least 16 termination letters have already been sent — and hundreds more are coming, people inside NIH tell me. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Today on :"this is not normal," here is an actual, official communication from the White House. Beyond the insanity of the language used here, it manages to debunk its own point that the NIH spent millions of dollars to make transgender mice. If you actually read what the studies were for...

A disgustingly disingenuous op-ed from our anti-vax health secretary that strains itself to provide even a hint of support for vaccination, while stoking fears about safety and downplaying their benefit. Remember, RFK Jr thinks measles outbreaks are fabricated. www.foxnews.com/opinion/robe...
