The difference in line play tonight is stark between these teams, at least in this instance. Wouldn't it be awesome if Love had the ability to stand in the backfield and pat the ball forever, the way Hurts has tonight?

Great positioning/adjustment by Reed to go and win it. Love does need WR help, but if he doesn't improve next year, things in Green Bay are going to be... Not great. Trying not to be doom and gloom, but those pure dropback numbers for him/this team seem concerning.

WAS looking extremely like the 2010 Packers right now, and DET looking extremely like the 2011 Packers.

Silver lining, 6 of those are at home, and of course there's always the away division games. And one of the road games is in Lambeau South (Jerry World). So it's still possible. Again, all on paper and barring injuries.

They get DAL and CAR, plus DEN from the extra AFC game. GB may face as many as 11 playoff team games next year (9 current and 2 next year maybes): DET/MN x2 ea, BAL, PIT, PHI, WAS, DEN from this year, plus CIN/DAL are in range of bounce back years. It will be the toughest Love year yet.

I wish I could get there with ya. Not convinced the front office will do enough and the schedule is likely tougher. This was a down year for Love and he will have to be better than this year for sure, and maybe even than last year, for them just to get back to the playoffs.

Love and the Packers are 0-7 vs NFC playoff teams in the last 7 chances and Love has only gone 92 or higher rating in 2 of them. He has to improve for GB to be relevant next year, especially with a tougher schedule lined up. A true 1000 yd WR1 looks more necessary than WR by committee now, too.

Agreed. The youth excuse is gone next year. Consistency has to arrive, but it's going to be so much harder to achieve with their stout opponents.

Not sure we can expect a bounce back year in 2025. We get the AFC North (3 good teams instead of 3 bad ones), DET and MN aren't going to disintegrate and have clearly better head coaches, and Love has A LOT of improving do, even ignoring his limitations of weapons on the field today.

GB September 2025 roster now looks like a medical ward. Oof.

Looks like 85 let up on his route there, but still not a great decision/throw.

It's getting harder and harder to defend Love with outings like this in big games. He has the Watson-out excuse today, but next year looking large for 10 now. The Dallas game is the extreme outlier at this point. Of 2023 DAL, 2024 DET, 2024 MN, and 2024 PHi, the DAL defense was the worst by far.

They need a thousand yard receiver next year, somehow, some way. The WR-as-committee experiment simply does not go without Watson.
comment in response to

I think the concern is it's not just one clear gap or player. Without Watson, the rest of the WRs did fine. Without Ja, the corners did fine. And fine doesn't win Superbowls. Fans sense it without being able to quantify it, but it's going to take more than 1 DE, 1 CB, and 1 WR to take the next step.

If anything, Malik looking good is a sign that MLF elevates mediocre QBs. Late Rodgers resurgence. Lift Love from where he'd otherwise be, and Malik being competent.
comment in response to

Yeah. The general lack of accuracy by Love is not beyond being at least questioned through two seasons now. He'll certainly have a chance to improve next year.

Their defensive line just doesn't have *it*. The Gary-gamble and next-year steps for everyone else didn't get to the ceiling they built their plan around this year. The D-line is a multi-year rebuild that they can't really start on until 2026 with their current contracts and needs at CB as well.
comment in response to
post
Yep. It's why I felt even in the summer that this was a transition year for them to grow. Love and MLF also did not do well in the first halves of any of these big games vs better records. Concerning, and definitely gives them a clear off-season study/scouting focus.

After a month of playing just well enough to make us wonder, we now have our GB playoff exit road map confirmed. They don't have the defense to keep them in games against the elite offenses. MN would have 30 already if they just made FGs.

It's this.

Favre and Rodgers had plenty of bad games, but I can't remember any where they were under 100 yds entering the 4th. I'm sure there are probably a few, but tonight was wretched by MLF, Love, and the offense in general.
comment in response to

It's stinkers like this that really give me pause with him. I know the injury is going to be a free pass, but he will finish the year as the 3rd QB in the division by a wide margin. It's also very clear that the entire offense falls apart without Watson pulling extra attention. A lot to fix for '25.
comment in response to
post
Agreed. The defensive line is mostly healthy, and yet again as playoff football approaches, it looks...not like we'd like them to look. Opposing QB just had all day to work back there. 56 still flying around late, at least.
comment in response to

A brief reprieve from the pick, but that one was solely on Darnold. If MN just plays control and high percentage, that pick doesn't even happen. MLF and Hafley got roasted by the MN coaches in this one. GB pass rush and Love didn't do much to help. Also, down 17 in 4th, it's time to abandon the run.
comment in response to
post
It's been ugly, but all the bounces have gone MN's way so far and GB is essentially trotting out a trio of avg WRs, a backup MLB, a backup CB, and a rookie S coming off injury. Even if GB doesn't come back, this game still doesn't predict an automatic playoff exit. Love needs to elevate, though.
comment in response to

We'll see what it looks like next week if SEA, LAR, and WAS win. It's going to drop precipitously if that happens. GB wants to go to the playoffs? Go 3-1 and leave no doubt. That's the only 100% path left. Any less, and they essentially need 1+ of the chasers with an easier schedule to screw up.

Pretty good. I'd probably go Words of Radiance at the top for me. The honor is dead moment from Kaladin to Dalinar at the dueling arena is just *chef's kiss*

Can LaFleur just hand it off for 3 runs and an ice here? Don't need Love throwing an INT here.

The hopes for our defensive front to play better were simply misplaced. We tried looking at it as glass half full so far this year, but there's no ignoring it anymore. Even with the FG block, this defensive line isn't going to be competitive in the playoffs.

Packers worst defensive line in decades. And that's saying a lot because they've had some terrible ones in that time.
comment in response to
post
Yep. The down linemen though? That's a multi-year rebuild right there. Especially because Clark and Gary contracts mean they will still be present and starting through 2025 at least.
comment in response to

There is no need to express any further optimism for the Packers defensive front 7 to play better this year. It's clearly a multi-year rebuild there. They aren't going to be able to successfully upgrade enough spots in just one offseason.
comment in response to

Offense hasn't been great today either, but GB just doesn't have the personnel on defense. They just don't. Haven't had the personnel to get it done on that side for over a decade now. Gutey can maybe scout offense, but his staff needs to start looking for some different traits on defense.
comment in response to

If the Packers lose this game, is it reasonable to remove them from serious Superbowl contention, and possibly even playoff contention this year? Their remaining schedule this year is pretty tough and the defensive front seven appears to be among the worst in the NFL by the numbers.

Their 2024 trends and identities are just becoming more and more entrenched so far. They need to turn things around real quick.

Nervous that this is a big letdown game for GB. The entire NFL media seems ready to shovel CHI into 2025 or 2026, and it just feels like one of those weeks where the Bears players put together one last gasp for pride before actually throwing in the towel for the year. Hope I'm wrong, and GB rolls.
