#Omnibus proposal of @ec.europa.eu deletes rules on civil liability in #CSDDD and leaves determination of applicable law to Member States. This is a major setback for access to remedies and will lead to divergent national laws. @europarl.europa.eu should reject it. ec.europa.eu/commission/p...

@drandrewforde.bsky.social writes in today’s Irish Examiner on the continuing need for accountability for Russian aggression.

Terrible backsliding from the EU Commission on the CSDDD.. shameful. deregulation packaged as simplification.

On 18 February @nationalmons.bsky.social hosted an event in Dublin Castle to mark the 70th Anniversary of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. Ireland has been a State Party to the Convention since 2018. @unesco.org

The ICC Prosecutor has requested the Pre-Trial Chamber to find that Italy failed to comply with its obligation to arrest Osama Elmasry (Almasri Njeem) and to refer Italy to the Assembly of States Parties and the UN Security Council. www.icc-cpi.int/sites/defaul...

I don't understand a word but the energy is adorable. Good luck, young man <3

Looking forward to joining the discussion at this conference on prosecuting the crime of aggression

I have taught, supervised and learned from many outstanding Palestinian students @uniofgalway.bsky.social. The standards they have achieved over the past 16 months have been truly remarkable. For the University to partner with an institution so clearly linked to their oppression defies belief.

"Our new research exposes the alarming realities that international students in Ireland are struggling with to find safe, affordable and minimum-standard accommodation"

"The University of Galway’s shameful decision to lead a new project with the Technion is indefensible and runs counter to its own statement that the University is 'committed to human rights and is anti-apartheid'." Letter from Academics for Palestine: academicsforpalestine.org/2025/02/19/c...

The #ICC "invites" #Italy to explain itself re: the arrest & subsequent release without charge of Osama Elmasry ('Almasri Njeem') last month. Njeem is wanted on suspicion of crimes against humanity & war crimes, committed in a prison in Tripoli, #Libya, from 2015. www.icc-cpi.int/sites/defaul...

The Garryduff Bird This tiny golden bird, thought to be a wren, is one of the true treasures in the Cork Public Museum. It measures just 1.5cm, and is delicately made from gold foil and filigree. It was found during the excavation of a ringfort in north-east Cork by MJ O'Kelly in the 1940s.

This is a huge setback for those of us campaigning for corporate accountability and human rights. Corruption isn't victimless. When e.g. a mining company bribes a government to get a license, people suffer. Money is diverted from govt services, regulations are ignored. www.ft.com/content/f880...

Another factor not mentioned here has to be that South Africa has been leading efforts to hold Israel to account for its crimes in Gaza. Has taken a genocide case to the International Court of Justice, referred the situation to the International Criminal Court and proposed domestic proceedings.

Many have correctly noted that forced transfer/deportation is a war crime & crime against humanity. On “voluntariness,” it bears emphasizing that the forced nature of transfer can be established where the perpetrators take advantage of a coercive environment that precludes genuine choice.

On voluntariness, here is what a judge of the Israeli Supreme Court had to say in relation to the use of "voluntary" human shields (Adalah v GOC Central Command, IDF):

⚡️The Core Group has worked out key aspects of the concept Statute of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression 🇺🇦, to be adopted in Kyiv in April. ST will be based on a CoE-Ukraine treaty; the enlarged partial agreement will be open to all states.

Stunning in its blatant disregard for multiple fundamental principles of international law. And a delight for Netanyahu, who is a fugitive from international justice - subject to an arrest warrant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza from the International Criminal Court.

"“There was a major prison breakout of 4,000 escaped prisoners. A few hundred women were also in that prison. “They were all raped and then they set fire to the women’s wing. They all died afterwards.”
