This is kind of random, but especially YA people, do you remember that scandal where a bunch of mostly YA authors who were found out to ask money for blurbs and not read the book at all? They were associated with a specific trade reviews venue. I can't find ANYthing any more about it.

I wrote a whole new short story today. I think it's my first time featuring dragons. It was a lot of fun to write, and I'll workshop it next month. #AmWriting #SpeculativeFiction #dragon

I watched Valmont last night, my 1st time since the 90s. It still holds up. It demonstrates that bored rich people are the worst people.

Sometimes a film reference pops up where you don’t expect it.

The Canadian establishment that lost its mind over a protest passing by Mount Sinai hospital has been entirely quiet over a Canadian company selling Nazi T-Shirts for the English world's most famous, out Nazi. I wrote about this and asked the question: why? noraloreto.substack.com/p/instrument...

Want to fight fascism? Wear a mask. Want champion social justice? Wear a mask. Want to keep yourself as healthy as possible? Wear a fucking mask. #MaskUp

"Learning about multiple Indigenous perspectives of autism and the [Cree] concept of 'pîtoteyihtam' helped me so much. […] I embrace the fact that I think differently" Autistic Cree writer Julianna Maggrah: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/... #neurodiversity #autism #autistic

Today I started a deadlift cycle. I managed three reps at 185 lbs. I tried for 205 lbs, but only managed one rep. My grip strength was the weakest link. Hoping to beat my previous PR in about a month. I was lifting 230 lbs before.

Anyone know where I can obtain more of these within Canada? Oxbow hasn't been able to make any for a while because of supply chain issues, and one of my chinchillas needs them to keep away bladder crystals. I'm running low and don't want him to be in pain. #chinchilla #VeterinaryMedicine

Canadians on here actually being like "I can't believe how bad things are getting in the US" without acknowledging Alberta just passed some of the harshest anti-LGBTQ+ laws and are about to vote Doug Ford back into power. Wakeup because the far right are in inside the building

obsessed with this review of a horror anthology from somebody who gave it one star because they appear to be unfamiliar with the concept of anthologies

The Audible Indigenous Writers’ Circle is a six-month mentorship and workshop program for emerging First Nations, Inuit and Métis writers in Canada looking to elevate their stories. The 2025 program will launch on June 2nd; apply to participate today! www.audible.ca/ep/IWC

One of my CDN acquaintances flew down to Florida for a vacation this week. There's no way I'd want to fly in US airspace, what with the destruction of air safety, notwithstanding every-fucking-thing else. I don't get it. Maybe it's because he's a white cis man and feels invincible.

February has been a dry spell for me, but I did just receive my author's copies of OnSpec Magazine. My poem "Nuliajuk and the Birds" is featured inside. This magazine is technically a December 2024 release but the print copies were delayed because of the mail strike. onspec.ca/

About one more week to send me your essay pitch! Under-represented/marginalised authors, we are VERY interested in your work (whether or not it focuses on identity!) Payment is AUD 5c/word... www.speculativeinsight.com/pitches-open

I just finished revising an incredibly vile bit of smut and sent it off to a speculative erotica anthology. Here's hoping it finds a home. It's full of eroticized infections and is the grossest thing I've ever written. I'm equal parts appalled/proud. #WritingLife #ShortStory #SpeculativeFiction

With the cancellation of many preorders due to a technical error, I’d appreciate any boost of my debut horror collection to try to recover. It’s sad, gruesome, and ranges from parent horror to sapphic cannibalism, hell hounds to lusting for lathes, masochistic androids to dementia 🖤 Thank you!

Please don't say "our Indigenous people" or "Canada's Indigenous people." This is gross. We don't belong to you.

I'm off to physio today. More than 1/2 the distance has no sidewalks. It also has lots of big trucks on a narrow road. I may need to leap out of the way onto giant snowbanks. I hope I don't fuck up my shoulder more doing so. I wish Kitchener was pedestrian-friendly.

My roommate just announced that the internet was a wild place twenty years ago. As someone who's been online since 1989, I think it's far wilder now. #internet

We need to stop blaming people for their disabilities. Health is not a permanent state. Most people will experience disability at some point in their lives. We’re not less than. We didn’t do anything wrong. We deserve equitable, dignified and adequate support.

In my city there is one cybertruck and one DIY parody of a cybertruck and the parody truck has become a local celebrity. Meanwhile, I always wish I had some rotten eggs to throw at the tesla whenever I see it.
