Today, I “flipped” my first set of Drosophila vials. Shared the labour with my wonderful colleagues. Feeling a strange sensation of workers’ solidarity with the scientists of the world, present and historic, who worked with this wonderful biological model.

I was lucky enough to not use the RER too much and live close enough to my workplace during my PhD, but now I have to take the RER B to work, and in the name of the Catholaïque republic, the number of times trains have been stopped, delayed, cancelled, etc. has can incredible.

The smol green fren naming is now official, in Bengali and Malayalam. Say hello to Maitree.

J’attends que @jlmelenchon.bsky.social visite le club MN Roy à Mexico, l’ancienne résidence du révolutionnaire bengali MN Roy, qui était l’un des fondateurs des partis communistes indien et mexicain.

Haven’t watched cricket for a long time, but saw some commentary, and things haven’t changed much since the last time I watched cricket because, in 2025, they are still fat-shaming one of Pakistan’s best batsmen, Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Chilling article on how the majority of scientists in Italy accepted the racist expulsion of their colleagues, and saw it as a boon for the crowd of waiting native candidates. The mathematicians lamented that their … vacant chairs might go to other departments. lareviewofbooks.org/article/i-do...

আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের শুভেচ্ছা, happy International Mother Language Day! বিশ্বের বাংলাভাষী বৈজ্ঞানিক, আপনারা বাংলায় স্নায়ুবিজ্ঞান সম্পর্কে লিখতে ইচ্ছুক হলে DM পাঠান! Bengaliphone scientists around the world, if you are willing to write about neuroscience in Bengali, DM!

Interesting article from @neuralreckoning.bsky.social but I'm sceptical of universities getting together, cutting across national boundaries, to create a common infrastructure, seeing how easily universities in UK, FR, CH, or IN give in to national governments. www.thetransmitter.org/policy/scien...

1/ Our paper appeared in @Nature today! www.nature.com/articles/s41... w/ Fiete Lab and @khonamikail.bsky.social . Explains emergence of multiple grid cell modules, w/ excellent match to data! Novel mechanism for applying across vast systems from development to ecosystems. 🧵👇

This looks like a great summer school in neurscience, with its stated goal to 'advance scientific education and to promote common understanding between people from different nations'. Venue for this year is in Cluny, France. Deadline - 15 April, 2025. neurobridges.net

It is the 25th anniversary of the celebration of International Mother Language Day tomorrow. I will be in Paris but not at the UNESCO headquarters, because of work. I'll post tidbits about this throughout the day tomorrow, and encourage you to do the same!

There’s a French festival in Kolkata which is going to show a French-Algerian worker being duped by his boss to be sent to Kolkata, and there he’s going to *teach workers in Kolkata* … le meilleur des droits sociaux français : grèves, manifestations, etc. Bengali Emilia Perez!

Same, but for eduroam.

I was writing « bureaumaniac Republic » to describe France and her love of humiliating and useless paperwork, and my swiping keyboard suggested changing it to « Brahmanical Republic » … Coincidence? I think not.

I am thinking of going with a couple of friends to Père Lachaise Cemetery tomorrow, this time with an actual plan that I made by myself - “Discovering the Other Worlds buried in Paris” If anyone wants to come, I’ll go there after an early lunch and stay till closure probably!

The Grand Rex using generative AI to make this is disappointing. You’re le Grand Rex, be a bit more creative. Be ashamed of terrible fingers and hearts with three lobes.

The entire République works on provisoire documents and attestations on flimsy pieces of paper but agents of the country will still be confused when shown one and ask for a physical badge. Make it make sense.

One of my favourite Anglophone bookstores in Paris, The Red Wheelbarrow, is facing a crisis. I would often pass by just to browse the books during my PhD, buy great books as gifts, and met wonderful people (like Nabila Ramdani) at events organised here. Please help if you can.

One of the cruelest yet equalising things in Paris is waiting in line at the Prefecture. We were two scientists with PhDs in line with an old lady who’s too frail to walk but is made to stand in line, along with young refugee mothers with kids, applying for a titre de voyage.

My vocabulary has expanded so much since I became an employee of the CNRS. Janus, Sesame, Magelan, Ariane, Etamine, Notilus, Agate-Tempo, RESEDA, ODS, e-dem, ENSAP, GAIA, matinfo, sDrive, NEO, RENATER, etc. Long live the bureaumaniac Republic!

Discussing with Ma about which one I think will be completed first - Kolkata Metro Green Line connecting Howrah to Sealdah, or Grand Paris Ligne 18 connecting my workplace to the RER B (and Orly Airport) … I have little faith in construction speeds of both entities.

OH MY GOD, a toxic gas extractor, with side walls and a front wall equipped to guillotine is called a ... SORBONNE in French (as I learnt during a safety visit at my new workplace)? My last 4 years would have been so much smoother if I had known this!

TIL that in Belgium, you can choose the primary language of your passport, between Dutch (Flemish), French, and German, and that determines the languages of the passport information pages, the order of the names on the front page, etc. www.reddit.com/r/PassportPo...

Given how people (including those who work in science) are apparently just now getting to know how science funding and administration works, does anyone have any reading suggestions? Especially ones comparing different countries, looking at the history, etc.

A reminder, since the French Prime Minister, Justice Minister, Interior Minister 'want to launch a grand debate on the droit du sol, to abolish it' - et je vais dire en français - le droit du sol n'existe pas en France. Il n'a jamais existé en France. www.histoire-immigration.fr/politique-et...

This will make getting British citizenship the most difficult in Europe, by far, with a waiting time of 15 years, and even making it more difficult than naturalisation in India. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Quelle est la situation juridique en France si votre employeur ne vous paie pas à temps au cours de votre premier mois d'emploi en raison de retards bureaucratiques ? Asking for a … friend.

Hello, my lovely first fruit fly!

Getting the taste of working at the Great “Paris” Science Campus of Saclay as it took ~2 hours for me to reach my workplace from Paris 15, as buses aren’t well marked, the same number on the same side of the road goes in different directions, and cellular reception is terrible.

It was SN Bose’s death anniversary yesterday and I can’t help but remember this extremely “have to integrate in France as I’m a foreigner” behaviour from Marie Skłodowska-Curie, who herself faced discrimination because of language, gender, ethnicity, etc. in France.

TIL `git config --global credential.helper store` actually stores the credentials (personal tokens, in my case) in ... plain text. Amazing.

New métro, new boulot, old dodo (i.e. low dodo).
