In ā€œpeople are more complex than people online seem to thinkד, it turns out at least one senior citizen taking part in the Colorado walk (although not one of the ones who was injured) was a pro-Palestinian Jewish woman who was *wearing a pro-Palestine shirt that day*. apnews.com/article/boul...

I agree

It was painfully obvious since at least George Zimmerman, and for those really pay attention much further back, that self-defense laws are politicized, only available to political in groups, not political out groups.

A trans woman was just sentenced to 15 years in prison for defending herself from an attacker. She wanted no part in the fight and witnesses described her actions as self-defense. With right-wing media constantly portraying her as "evil" since the incident, the trial was over before it began.

New Atheism became immediately *riddled* with bigots eager to oppress.

The 80/20 answer is Trump and the loss of popularity of social leftism (in broad strokes) after 2020. Yes, it loses a lot of nuance, but that is the short answer to how feminism failed to penetrate the culture.

Very common sentiment on here I've noticed is "well yeah Trump's term is going catastrophic so far, but will that even matter??" and it feels like the obvious answer is "yes, if you make it matter!" Like what kind of philosophical crisis are you grappling with here, this is simpler than you think.

like, listen man, you can feel any way you want about the oil industry and the politics of the Middle East but one thing I'm pretty sure of is that the major oil producing countries of the region neither rely on regional instability to do what they do nor are they "subjugated" to the US.

I think people running government agencies should have some expertise in the agencies they have been hired to run

America is beginning to mobilize against these horrifying ICE detentions.

OMFG imagine writing a putatively ā€˜progressive’ critique of international students in US higher ed in the NYT and your argument isn’t the exploitation of those students via exorbitant tuition. This is just straight nationalist xenophobia dressed up in polite prose. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/o...

[transphobia] This is the FBI asking for tips on those ā€œmutilatingā€ trans children. Learned readers know who exactly they’re talking about when they say ā€œmutilationā€.

Picking up on a distinction introduced by the late great Steve Horowitz, I argue that libertarians make a mistake when they equate being anti-state with being pro-liberty.

Hopes fuels resistance. Hope gets us up when we don't think we can make it any further. From the little things to the big. What is it that drives your hope? I hope for a world in which my kids live in joy, not fear. #HopeIsAPractice

We won't. The troll dynamic is essentially unchanged since the days of USENET, because the goal is the same: disrupt civil discourse and waste other people's time. There's nothing I've seen from troll recently that I didn't see 30 years ago in a newsgroup.

ā€œIt’s the Democrats’ fault the Republicans are going after trans peopleā€ is a fucking lie and the only reason to tell it is if you think you’re safe from Republicans’ attacks on trans people.

Very much this. Things have actually gone pretty well in the courts, all things considering. I am worried about the "big beautiful bill" being a sign of a congress that isn't just passive, but actively enabling Trump. But what I'm *really* worried about is the stuff Jonathan talks about.

By the by, people of Bluesky- you can just talk about good things in your life or share nice photos without self-flagellating. It doesn't actually help others, the stated goal of the entire feed, to go "Everything is awful and miserable and Hell is on Earth but here's my cute doggo."

Voter appeals $200 Community outreach $150 Targeted messaging $800 Doomposting relentless misery and shaming people for enjoying anything in their lives outside of glorious revolution $3,600 Policy promises $150 someone who is good at politics please help me budget this. my movement is dying.

During the election I repeatedly got called a terrible selfish person for thinking my own civil rights mattered at all while Gaza was also happening. (So we shouldn’t do anything to stop the rise of the guy who will make both things worse for some reason.)

I want to highlight that threatening to tattoo a Jewish person with a Star of David is evocative of the Holocaust both because it’s marking them with the star and because it evokes the tattooing of concentration camp prisoners. Judaism also contains prohibitions against getting tattoos.

makes clear safety sense for everyone, e-bike riders included, for anything that can do over say 20 mph to require a motorcycle license and be ridden on the street

Been saying this for years now, to the point where I've been made a persona non grata among multiple leftist groups for doing so.

I know everyone who needs to hear this has me blocked already. Let me try anyway. Leftists, you need to deal with your antisemites. They are committing terrorist attacks and making everyone unsafe. Everyone else: stop caveating your support for Jewish people. It’s dangerous. Just embrace them.

Co-signed Actually do something about the antisemites in your movement

Going from 04 to 08 is pretty insane tbh, I kinda see why people thought republicans were cooked for a generation.

this is a really great example of how people are generally bad at predicting were events will take us

Can somebody explain the theory of politics by which you win elections by dumping on people who acquire new information and then change their minds to agree with you?

"How dare you love yourself when there is suffering in the world" is a sentiment that belongs in a radical church, not a political movement of any kind.
