How wonderful to spend the afternoon in the company of a group of commuter students discussing some of the challenges they face. Very few positive comments about commuting. Some of these students are commuting 4+ hours per day, starting very early (for 9am classes) and getting home late.

After a busy day in Dublin yesterday, I am on the move again. This time to Limerick, where I am super excited to attend a workshop tomorrow with @saraheaton.bsky.social

Commuting by bicycle in Belgium pays off as employees earn compensation for every km they ride. 1 in 6 employees commute by bike and get a bicycle allowance of €0.28/km. People cycling to work in 2024 earned an average of around €460 net per year (some as high as €810), up 20% over the past year.

Just read that article in yesterday’s @irishtimes.com about DEI programmes in Irish Universities, by the emeritus prof from UCC, and now I am really annoyed.

Educators: AI is not inevitable. Sure, we can't put the horse back in the barn, but we also are not required to use it in our teaching and I think there is an ethical framework, as Chuck and others have laid out nicely, for resisting its presence in our courses.

I am getting quite a few new followers this week. If you are new here, please complete your profile at least - so that I know if I should follow you back.

1/ Will AI autotune my essay (Cormier 2023)? Are AI sceptics tilting at windmills in a quixotic questto be aligned with yesterday’s epistemic landscape (Perrotta 2023)? Is using ChatGPT like“eating plastic for your cognitive agency and natural intelligence” (Nephew 2023)?

Have been on two trains today. Both times the reservation system hasn’t been working. Pure chaos.
