My dad died 30+ years ago, but the opening song on the new Turnpike Troubadour album hits like it was yesterday. Absolutely beautiful songwriting by Evan Felker and Ketch Secor. To anyone lucky enough to know death didn’t take the best of them.

They don’t build mascots like they did in 1900 Wisconsin.

Happy @lindaholmes.bsky.social Explains The Property Brothers To Me Day, to all who celebrate.

Every single musician from Appalachia for the last 50 years has written a song about how much coal mining sucks

A universal 10% rate, 25% rate for Mexico and Canada, and 125% for China is still an insane inflationary tax hike on the American people.

Evergreen

I wrote about the upcoming Ken Paxton v John Cornyn Senate primary. "Cornyn is an establishment Republican who’s been in office since you were playing Snake on your Nokia. Paxton is the MAGA insurgent who laughs off ethics violations like they were parking tickets" thebarbedwire.com/2025/04/03/c...

Ok what’s going on here? Yields are going up which means bond prices are going down. Fewer buyers of the world’s safest asset. Normally when the economy slows, there’s a flight to safety, not away from it. Means the world may be abandoning America. We are flirting with a true crisis.

The astonishing thing to me is that my husband and I are dutifully filing our taxes right now instead of just saying f*ck it and seeing what happens. I mean really, why bother?

stop calling things deportation just because they call it deportation. -You cannot legally deport people without due process. -You cannot legally deport citizens. -They are defining down deportation to break the law.

Ugh. Brace yourselves.

The question we're all asking ourselves today.

They detained **an American citizen**. If you think any of us is safe, you are wrong.

I think the funniest thing about the Ted Cruz Curse is he really won’t confine it to just a couple of teams; if you are a Texas school and you have a big game, there is a decent chance Ted is rolling in wearing your polo and bringing your doom with him

Over the weekend, I analyzed data showing a big drop in foreign travelers flying to the US. Today, I wrote about that analysis and the lessons it holds for evaluating crime data and trends. jasher.substack.com/p/how-fewer-...

basically the way posting works is every one is a little ape in a cage. when you reply to someone's post it's like you're rattling the bars of their cage and they start hooting back

This is perfect. Absolutely perfect.

I never imagined a shoutout to the Gulf of Mexico could be remotely controversial, but here we are. Mad respect for @shanesmithmusic.bsky.social for not holding back while launching into “Coast” at their fantastic show at Billy Bob’s last night. 🫡 #gulfofmexicoforever

"His stubborn strain of stupidity belongs on a list of deadly sins. And that weak-mindedness is now plunging the world into chaos and potentially into depression." On Trade and Tariffs, Trump’s Stubborn Ignorance Shines Bright www.thebulwark.com/p/trade-and-...

Just for fun, a timelapse of the last 15 minutes of the DOW today.

"I thought only other people would be hurt." - the epitaph on our national tombstone

If NC Republicans get away with this, this will open the floodgates for other Republican states to do this. Elections in America will become meaningless & we will no longer be a democracy. This is the highest stakes case we’ve seen since the Jim Crow era.

Trump loves tariffs because he feels like it’s a way to shake people down. Even better, shake FOREIGNERS down. He thinks protectionism is more akin to a protection racket. He clearly gets an almost sexual thrill from announcing them, and the more, and the higher, the better.

The find-out era sucks.

This is the ideal male body. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like.

If our democracy dies, this is its epitaph

Remember when people warned what would happen if the GOP was elected in November and everybody else told us we were being hyperbolic and alarmist? Yeah, good times.

Wall Street bets discord is so goddamn funny right now

From a source at NIH: “Right now NIH’s ability to buy things is dead. Nearly all people with the power to make an order — purchasing people — have been removed. The NIH hospital can’t buy medicines, the labs can’t buy petri dishes. X-Ray machine breaks? Too bad. Everything is stopped”

Wow who could’ve guessed that this would happen It’s almost as if USAID was a pillar of American soft power and influence in the world It’s almost as if it was entirely predictable that America’s adversaries would work to fill the void left by USAID’s destruction

We tried mass tariffs in 1828, and it crashed the economy. We tried again in 1930, and it crashed the economy. Third time’s the charm, I guess.

So efficient

It has been two weeks since a Georgia woman was arrested for her miscarriage, and not one major national outlet has covered the story

It's getting buried, but Houston will almost certainly not have representation in Congress until January 2027. Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner died nearly a month ago and Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has simply decided not to call a special election to fill the seat.

I got you fam
