I'm honoured and excited that a new weekly Future Fluent podcast series from @jeremyr.blog and Betsy Corcoran opens with our book Story Machines: How Computers Have Become Creative Writers. The episode covers storytelling with humans and machines. www.futurefluent.net

The Open University has published a framework for learning and teaching Critical AI Literacy Skills. Although the framework is intended for Open University staff and students, it is relevant for any organisation looking to develop inclusive training in AI literacy. about.open.ac.uk/sites/about....

A valuable roundup of research evidence from 5 studies on the impact of GenAI on human learning. TLDR: over-relying AI assistance can be associated with reduced critical thinking. drphilippahardman.substack.com/p/the-impact...

DeepSeek heralds a new era of international proliferation of AI models. We are entering an AI-infused world. We will all need to learn and adjust to its opportunities and challenges. www.linkedin.com/feed/update/...

Another UK university drops big Elsevier deal The @york.ac.uk has opted out of a subscription deal with the academic publishing giant Elsevier, saying it needs to adopt a “more financially sustainable approach”, @resprofnews.bsky.social has learned. www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...

I have been having fun turning the Mario Brothers into a 1940s industrial film using Veo 2.

Excellent summary of the year in generative AI and its current state. Essential reading for those who think they know all about Large Language Models, and for those who don't. simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/31/...

8 years ago, @dylanwiliam.bsky.social and Siobhan Leahy wrote a concise and valuable Quick Reference Guide for Embedding Formative Assessment. It's now out of print, so they are sharing it with anyone who wants it: bit.ly/EFAQRG (pdf). #edusky

I'm delighted to be associated with AI in Education at Oxford University (aieou.web.ox.ac.uk). AIEOU aims to promote responsible AI in Education through collaboration and shared research. It's based in @oxforddeptofed.bsky.social and led by @sararatner.bsky.social .

I hear that EU countries are planning to build their own national LLMs - France (already, with Mistral), Germany, Netherlands, Norway and doubtless others, in the belief that only their own AI model will match their language, culture and security. National necessity, or a waste of money and energy?

From my talks with unis about GenAI, main concerns are data security and accuracy of responses. Worth considering open-model GenAI - free to use, can run locally, now as powerful as GPT-4, no data sent outside, can be customised. Here is a framework for a course on AI literacy for students. Many thanks to those who commented on an earlier version on LinkedIn. Do continue the discussion here - additions, emphasis? #ai #education

Hey, here's my starter pack of folks I follow on Bsky around AI, in relation to writing, tech, regulation, thinking, and pedagogy. It's a mix of critical, enthusiastic, and moderate voices. Who did I miss? go.bsky.app/NG7WrA5

AI is moving from prompts & responses towards semi-autonomous AI agents in social media. Universities, or companies, could offer online tutorials facilitated by AI plus AI-led research projects. We will need to rethink universities for an era of social AI. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

My podcast interview with Keith Sawyer on AI, creative writing and story generation. Thank you Keith for the opportunity to contribute to The Science of Creativity. www.sawyerpodcast.com/dr-mike-shar...

The New OpenAI advanced voice model could have as big an impact on HigherEd as ChatGPT. Any education provider could offer online Oxford-style tutorials and seminars, on any subject, facilitated by AI. You are right to be sceptical - but this will confuse a global HE sector. #academicsky #ai

OpenAI also said “it will host a meeting in October with presidents and provosts of leading higher education institutions to discuss how to adopt AI effectively and responsibly in a university setting, including for teaching and advancing academic research.” 😩

"Fabulous overview of the history of story generation - especially useful now we have GTP-4 and other LLMs to understand the very rich prehistory. Engagingly written, too." Review on Goodreads. www.routledge.com/Story-Machin... #storytelling #AI

Thinking of humanities examples for new OpenAI model that can do complex reasoning. Tried asking it to reason about alternative histories. First plot a history of the UK if it had remained in the EU. Then consider impact of social media on that history. An engaging way to teach contingent histories.

OpenAI has just released a new model. It will impact education because it can do complex reasoning. openai.com/index/learni... Applications include: personalized learning pathways; adaptive assessment, interactive simulations. But - it sometimes makes more errors than the previous (4o) model.

What would you include in an AI literacy course for students (school, college, university) and what would you omit? Here's my outline graphic - I'm keen to develop it further for HE policy makers. #HigherEd #EdTech #AIEd #ChatGPT #AIEdu #AIEducation #Edusky

The UK Government is funding a £3 million data store for companies to develop AI tools for schools. Is it money well spent? See my article on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-3-...

I've finally made the switch. I'll carry on monitoring the bird site but I'll post here from now onwards, and on LinkedIn for longer pieces, on AI and education. Looking forward to some inspiring conversations.

Now OpenAI has released its marketplace for "GPTs", I've published a friendly assistant for teachers based on my book "Practical Pedagogy: 40 New Ways to Teach and Learn". If you have an OpenAI subscription, do give it a try and send me feedback on your experience. chat.openai.com/g/g-RCHNUwnD...

Glad to have popped up here. Thank you @jonmason.bsky.social for introducing me. Looking forward to civilised chat.
