Was welcomed back to America last night with absolutely stunning scenery over the Catskills. I know we all feel a way about flying, but gotta make sure @lissaharris.bsky.social sees this

I’ve noticed how often even well-meaning cis white men just *totally miss* that the Musk/Trump regime are obviously driven by overt and hideous misogyny, in addition to overt and hideous racism.

“Your economic problems are because of this vulnerable minority” is just such hack, trite bullshit and it is embarrassing that it works on anyone. (Also, this is a sign that people in his orbit are talking to him about needing to do more to stop any $$ going to gender care.)

Bonhoeffer has a little aside in his (unfinished) Ethics that many secular people who espoused liberal/humanistic values against the Nazis were drawn into the (confessing) church even if they had long been nonbelievers; faced with antichrist they instinctively looked to the power that could save.

This “x will be treated as a resignation” stuff reminds me of when new mgmt at my old job told us that refusal to accept a new job description with 2x responsibilities and 0 pay increase would be treated as a resignation. the new ED came to us straight from a stint in VC world.

Trump's DOJ is preparing to put all incarcerated transgender women into men's facilities as early as next week, and according to NPR "the bureau is well aware of concerns about potential risks of assault, sexual violence and suicides"

My husband and daughter slept on the flight home yesterday (Berlin to nyc via Reykjavik, arriving at 6pm eastern) like chumps and they are suffering today. A jet lagged little kid is basically a small, silly-belligerent drunk

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

NEW: The Trump administration has locked Minnesota out of $200 million in federal food and climate grants awarded last summer. Projects breaking ground this year were depending on that money. minnesotareformer.com/2025/02/21/t...

“The unknown was not as scary as being complicit and not speaking up,” Ms. Ortiz said... “I can exist on cornflakes and community at the end of the day if it means that my soul is intact.”

Not sure telling trans people under attack by the authoritarian government to commit suicide is a win for atheist antifascism.

When in Hamburg we passed by a children’s bookstore with antifascist materials in the window & got one of the greatest stickers of all time.

Man, every time we are in Europe (and typically to various different cities and countries ) we notice how child-friendly it is. There’s real care put into kids’ interpretive activities at museums, often surprising infrastructure touches, and in many places a public effusiveness towards kids.

One path forward for a Hochul crew nervous about Cuomo’s return would be to shovel their massive amounts of money towards driving up his negatives, which this poll suggests would be very effective.

When your enemy tells you what tactics not to use, you should probably use those tactics

Whoever wrote that line about “mired in diversity issues” should be fired

The Joint Chiefs don't change with a new president. Supposed to be impartial, nonpartisan. Until now. Trump fired the Chair, Gen. Charles Brown (because he's Black), Navy chief Lisa Franchetti (for being a woman), and the 3 top Army, Navy, and Air Force lawyers (because they say follow the law).

Fascism stems from both material conditions and spiritual sickness, which reinforce each other. “People are wicked” is not solely a political problem, but it’s one that the political needs to grapple with on a more serious and nuanced level than in high school civics class.

Oh fuck, what a grift. J6 terrorists sue a DOJ controlled by Trump; Trump orders DOJ lawyers to settle for an undisclosed amount, both sides agree to an NDA. This can happen dozens, hundreds of times. Just an ingenious way to funnel tax dollars to far-right terrorist groups.

The hot dog stand in the Iceland airport always hits

A good update on what this fight is about. The guards do not come off well. nysfocus.com/2025/02/20/b...

If you fight fascism without but do not address the contradictions within liberal democracies that drive fascist sympathies in this age, I think you will struggle to attain lasting victories. This is why cutting social services and cultural funding to pay for armaments may not be a good deal!

jumping from $50M/yr to $40M *per month* does not sound very efficient to me, if i'm being honest

This is interesting because the question is less what they will do as *legislators* and more what they will do as *politicians*. AOC is a member of the House minority, but she’s doing a lot of politics about all of this anyway.

So if you criticize Elon Musk, Trump’s DOJ will send you this letter. Members of Congress must have the right to forcefully oppose the Trump Administration. I will not be silenced.

Thinking about going back to work in the US makes me feel like this poorly taxidermied ocelot from the Berlin natural history museum

An update on this saga: NYC Public Schools republished the videos PBS took down But one of the historians involved in creating the materials says it's only a partial victory www.chalkbeat.org/newyork/2025...

The root that tears apart your foundation begins as a seed of distrust, hate, and blame. The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.

Going to be quite frank, I do not find anything about this “king” stuff to be funny in any form, don’t think there’s a place for us to just crack wise about it and pretend it’s normal, yes we are all irony-poisoned but if we don’t draw a line here then we have no line

one of the very disgusting things about this is that Rodneyse’s district is heavily Haitian and absolutely terrified right now. They stand to lose everything - end to TPS, immigration raids, etc.
