Critical piece about the incredible value of NOAA “A lot of the weather information Americans rely on starts with real-time data collected by NOAA satellites, airplanes, weather balloons, radar and maritime buoys, as well as weather stations around the world.” theconversation.com/noaas-vast-p...

Amidst the chaos science must go on. Dr. Stephen and colleagues developed a really nice DIY filtration solution for evaporative coolers - check it out. Quite effective in reducing PM2.5 especially during wildfires www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Protests against Musk are even making the news abroad. I am looking to trade in my Tesla as soon as I can figure the best option. I have really enjoyed the car but strongly do not support the actions of the unelected Musk. #TeslaTakeover bbc.com/news/article...

Guess what - our Science Moms climate ad made this top ten best (upcoming) Super Bowl ads list! The only nonprofit ad on the list! Warning: do not watch without a tissue www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/a...

Also…always use an exhaust hood that exhaust directly outdoors to remove cooking emissions no matter what kind of stove you have. Cooking releases fine particles, VOCs etc. that cause adverse health effects. scopeblog.stanford.edu/2018/03/06/u...

here I am to recommend to you an induction cooktop. Gas stoves emit NO2 and are associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections in children…ane more. rmi.org/health-impac... I hope this helps, I love my induction stove. Shelly

Use this tool figure out if the #aircleaner you are considering will work for you. Stick with the basics, like a #HEPA filter that physically removes particles from the air and activated carbon that removes ozone/NO2 healthybuildings.hsph.harvard.edu/tools/air-cl... @joeallenjoe.bsky.social

The most iconic figure in the environmental sciences is the Keeling Curve, the CO₂ record from Mauna Loa, Hawaii. @noaa.gov had a wonderful site where you could visualize and download these data, and now it's just gone. These data belong to us and we should not let this happen!

Went to download some solar radiation measurements from @noaa.gov and that tax payer-funded knowledge & data is gone. Who would steal weather data? Criminals ... that's who.

DOGE at the CDC. What could possibly go wrong? Again, I thank our federal workers for showing up every day in the face of an unimaginable attack.

Interesting clinical trial from @linseymarr.bsky.social et al. 8 volunteers exposed to influenza virus: some produced airborne viral RNA detected when breathing/talking. Viral RNA was detected on frequently touched surfaces from the rooms of only 2 high shedders journals.asm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...

Our latest paper is available, showing home evap coolers can bring wildfire smoke in, but directly attaching a MERV13 filter to EC intake reduced particle levels indoors. Project led by the amazing Prof. Stephens at IIT and Dr. Solomon at PHI. nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=https%3A...

Yes, your gas stove is killing you. And just because everyone and their grandma has one and the whoosh of the little blue flame just seems so comforting and familiar doesn’t mean it’s not. Hear the latest data from a pediatrician and professional chef: radiokingston.org/en/broadcast...

Many, many people are reaching out with questions about the impact of the LA fires on their homes and environment. There are some things we can say based on the research that was done after the Marshall Fire in Colorado. Here is a short thread to summarize what was learned. @ciresnews.bsky.social

Post fires, if your home didn't burn & is smoke damaged, what about the clothes in your home? Wash them; if they don’t smell after washing, they should be fine. I recommend not using detergent with fragrance, so fragrance-free (fragranced detergents may contain phthalates, a toxic chemical).

I advocate for no carpet in your home. See @lisawoodshapiro.bsky.social's www.wired.com/story/your-a.... It covers health effects, resuspension and toxic chemicals in carpets. PFAS is used to make things water repellent or stain resistant. Also see this paper www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Looking for resources on WUI fire impacts to your home? @ciresnews.bsky.social provides info. My heart breaks for my home state. I grew up in Colton CA, went to Harvey Mudd College, and UC Berkeley. My Berkeley apartment was destroyed in 1991. cires.colorado.edu/news/how-mit...

Wildfire smoke inside homes can create health risks that linger for months − great tips for cleaning and staying safe. Thanks Dr. @colleenreid.bsky.social! theconversation.com/wildfire-smo...

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

This is exactly why the mantra “I don’t want to be a professor anymore” keeps rearing its ugly head in my brain. LOL. Thanks for reposting @mcsweeneys.net so I didn’t miss this article.

Here are your top 10 things to check in your home to ensure that your air quality is healthy this year:

@danlarremore.bsky.social was one of the authors of this study, from @cuboulder.bsky.social. He presented this to a workshop of CU faculty&leaders I was at. Really important, blew my mind. I’ve experienced many contemporary female colleagues retire early…would love to host a discussion RE. Who’s in?
