One caveat is to look at American history, particularly the history of Southern "politics" where vigilante violence was used instead of state capacity to maintain power. Regimes kept state governments weak, underfunded, and with low public investment. Localities were governed by "Big Men."

It’s useful to remember that these guys are kleptocrats, and one of their goals is to extract rents while the extracting is good.

It's not the Republican Party. It is their voters & they will still hate anyone not exactly like themselves & everything they don't understand.

It was... really something. We're going to need imperfect allies in this time but I did not hold back on my opinion that they were fundamentally misreading the moment, the ability to leverage scientists as allies, & the degree to which this is already causing a brain drain that won't be reversible.

That is the "obeying in advance mindset." University administrators are more than happy to MAGAize their universities so long as they keep their sinecures.

“If standing up to criminals were safe and easy, we wouldn’t need police. Their fight-or-flight response is surely kicking in. But scared as they might be, there’s nowhere to run.”✔️
Every day drives home the immense harm Garland did w/his hands-off the R elite. & sorry, the buck stops w/ Biden.

No exaggeration. Trump already attempted a coup to stave off accountability. He's Orbanizing the government. His buddy Bolsonaro allegedly plotted to have his successor killed. We're in that neighborhood. Sunlight, not heads-in-the-sand, is the best disincentive. www.offmessage.net/p/a-problem-...

Do we think Elon Musk checked with real lawyers before he started stealing money from states and NGOs without authorization, perhaps even without a government appointment? www.offmessage.net/p/a-problem-...

Just to keep things in proportion, 13,000 employees to monitor contagious, infectious, & chronic diseases in a country of 340 million, is not a lot.

Anyway if you think that liberalism has generally failed to meet the moment I am very inclined to agree with ypu but id you don't recognize the above and have a plan to tackle it you're not going to go anywhere but to the next spot in line for not meeting the moment.

It's just... irrational, motivated reasoning package is not just a right-wing thing, people. The post-truth society has been building for years and it's puked all over everything including progressive and liberal internal discourses

Yes, because I definitely think 2026 will be "bust" whether Jed is brought back by Rickets or not. The Ricketts wants to get the payroll down to the level of the other NL and AL Central teams. They have not quite connected the dots that Marquee has struggled because the team is not very good.

On the other hand, Trump's core constituency, the Plutocrats, have been unhappy with high employment because workers have been able to demand higher pay, telework, & benefits for the last 4 years. They want a labor surplus both to keep costs low and give them more power to "traumatize" workers,

I do like the reporter followed up by pointing out that Leavitt just lied, straight-faced, through her teeth by referring to an IG reports as fraud in 1 year when it was the cumulation of fraud over 8 years (2015 thru 2022).
