The European Commission has just made it clear that the rigid constraints they had placed on public finance were totally artificial. They have now lifted them to enable massive military production.

This was a frankly bizarre decision and one I hope the Ministers will reverse! Pass it on @threadinburgh.scot @historicscotland.bsky.social

Had the best morning visiting, not one but two primary schools in east Edinburgh to deliver parent talks with #Parents4FutureScotland. Fab to see the work pupils have done on air pollution and how to tackle it, and to help them share their knowledge with their grown-ups!

The government could save households £100s a year on their energy bills by making these three changes ⬇️ Why wait?

Israeli tanks have entered the occupied West Bank for the first time in 20 years. Over 40,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced. This is ethnic cleansing & annexation. Israel must be held to account. We need a full arms embargo, & all economic & diplomatic ties severed.

Green influence in the cross-party East Lothian Council budget secured £30k for natural flood management, including through a catchment partnership in the River Esk. 1/2

Sadly it’s unusual these days to see this level of empathy and careful research in articles about active travel! Grateful to the Scotsman for this coverage - Drem➡️Gullane remains a key missing connection and I hope to see firm commitment to it in the next ELC Local Development Plan!

SAVE THE LEITH #LTN Those who oppose safer streets are urging council to reverse safer streets introduced thru the #Leith low traffic neighbourhood (LTN). PLEASE don't let them win. Please take 5 mins to email your councillors & urge them to save the Leith LTN: rd8993.wixsite.com/liveable-leith

Chamberlain tried being ‘nice’ as well, as I recall. Is that the parallel Starmer is going for?

I had a great time visiting Leith’s Liveable Neighbourhood this morning - lovely to see the public realm improvements that also reduce traffic and create more space for getting around sustainably. Given yesterday’s Audit Scotland report it is urgent we implement more of this kind of design! 🚶🚲🌱

Rachel Reeves holds newts in contempt, it seems. So I thought I'd post this glorious painting of a "lion of the duckweed" by Jackie Morris + my paean to these "kings of the pond", both from The Lost Words. Newt-lovers, unite!

Just imagine these companies (and their investors) had put that £3bn into renewable development instead! Now instead they have stranded assets 💨🌞🌊 #NoNewOil&Gas #ClimateRisk #Divestment

Embarrassing is the polite word for it!! Classic implementation gap and the reason targets are useless unless you have the backbone to implement policies that will meet the targets.

I’m so full of love and gratitude to every wonderful person who showed up, and kept showing up, to make this happen. It shows the importance of legal routes to hold gov and businesses to account for our common future. #NoNewOil

#NoGrowthOnADeadPlanet Economic growth isn't going to give us a safe, livable planet if we keep pumping more and more carbon into the atmosphere. Neither will it improve many people's quality of life, without a fairer distribution of wealth. Come on Labour, really? news.sky.com/story/chance...

At the #FRM2025 conference: have heard some fantastic input from school pupils in Ayr and Portobello, an economist literally calling for a revolution, and moving testimony / call to action from Angus climate hub. And it’s not even lunchtime yet! Brilliant ideas all round💡 🌎

Andrew Boswell is a principled campaigner who has put together a series of meticulous legal cases on the terrible future impact of the UK’s addiction to road building. No wonder Starmer is running scared, but this kind of smear is a) pathetic and b) straight out the BoJo/Priti Patel handbook 🤮

Abolish the home office

Love this, but after 15 years of bike commuting I do still feel my vibes are more picture 1?!

POV: it’s also unfair and distressing to be subject to sexual harassment, particularly by a very powerful man. We should be less concerned with *seemliness* when reckoning with a complicated legacy, and more concerned with telling the truth in order to make toxic behaviour less likely in future

"World's richest use up their fair share of 2025 carbon budget in 10 days." A wealth tax on the richest 1% would discourage this destructive behaviour, which is fuelling extreme climate impacts like California wildfires. 🔥 Plus, ban private jets! Help make it happen - join at @scottishgreens.org.

Worth remembering, always.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a child waking up in possession of an un-built Lego set has absolutely no interest in eating breakfast.

Sea life is choking to death from ghost fishing 🦭🐋 I’m calling on the Scottish Government to tackle the problem through its circular economy strategy in 2025. https://theferret.scot/ghost-fishing-in-shetland/?utm_source=mailpoet&utm_medium=email&utm_source_platform=mailpoet&utm_campaign=Daily%20a…

More of this in our urban design, please! (Also, does Edinburgh have any historically-buried waterways, I feel like it *must*?)

Grid of festive delight

I loved being part of this panel discussion last night about how to organise (and talk about) a fairer economy - distributing resources more fairly, creating shared prosperity and ecological welfare. (And bikes - always bikes 🚲) Thanks @ecodenker.bsky.social and #ScottishYoungGreens

Angela Rayner trying to defend this Labour government is a near impossible task. Their "tough choices" are the continued transfer of wealth from the public to the private sector. Starmer needs to decide - who does he work for? The people or private capital? #bbclaurak

Thank you Lorna for raising this issue - the city deal is supposed to create ‘inclusive economic growth’ (🧐 - this is not even a thing) but what about the residents of Lothian & Borders who don’t have cars? Public transport investment is much more urgently required!

I was lucky enough to wander into Alter Altar in the Tramway in 2023 and it was such a moving, magical experience. Not surprised its creator also slayed her Turner acceptance speech. Congratulations to the magnificent #JasleenKaur 🇵🇸✊🏽

This doesn’t surprise me - we did shared parental leave and trying to negotiate the paperwork was a huge and daunting admin task in itself. We have to make it easier for parents to share the care! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Lovely afternoon with @edcriticalmass.bsky.social and @rewildingbritain.bsky.social to have some cycling joy whilst supporting a) safer streets and b) the call for Scotland to be a rewilding nation. Some great wild accessories on some other bikes/riders too.

Hard agree with this. The concept of ‘fiduciary responsibility’ gets used to cloak investments that will mean we have no future to retire in, in complete denial about the impact of climate chaos on the investments themselves.

This would be a great move to tackle climate and cost of living crises in one go - I get emails all the time from constituents impacted by the cost of bus fares (and that’s despite the presence of @lothianbuses.bsky.social - probably the best publicly-run company on Scotland)

The Conference of Oil Producers (COP29) succeeded again. The purpose of COPs is to delay meaningful action on climate change so as to permit ongoing high levels of fossil fuel use. This is true even for so-called & PR-slick world leading nations eg. the UK Rosebank oil field & UK airport expansion!

This is brilliant, rare good news, and an example of the global south leading - richer nations should be put to shame in their refusal to make similar pledges. We need a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty now! (Though also need to scrutinise these biomass get-out clauses 🧐)

I held off on buying @mogwai.scot tickets for the Edinburgh gig, as they only had seated when I looked and I *suspected* a forthcoming Barrowland announcement - delighted that I was right and can spend our next wedding anniversary having quiet-loud post-rock fun in the world’s best venue #earplugs

good for him! work-life balance is so important
