@friends-earth.bsky.social's @rosiedownes.bsky.social described the signal of support for Gatwick airport’s expansion as “totally bewildering” in the face of climate change. She says: “Expanding Gatwick won’t deliver the growth needed" My coverage for @endsreport.com ⬇️

Thames Water's chairman welcomed the court's decision to approve the firm's loan plan. The chairman also mentioned this cash injection will help the company complete its appeal against Ofwat's latest price review. The regulator blocked it from raising bills by 59% by 2030. More @endsreport.com ⬇️

Campaign group @windrushwasp.bsky.social and Lib Dem MP Charlie Maynard made a submission to court arguing against allowing the loan to go ahead. Maynard has now said he plans to appeal the judgment, arguing the only way to get Thames Water “back onto a stable financial footing” is through a SAR.

The judge who presided over the case said rescuing Thames Water and "giving the market a chance to agree a permanent restructuring plan before the government is forced to fund a special administrator" is in the public interest. But campaigners still argue that a SAR is better for customers ⚠️

@chemtrust.bsky.social's Chloe Alexander said: "The health of people in Birmingham should benefit from the same level of protection as those in Belfast or Bonn." My coverage for ENDS ➡️ www.endsreport.com/article/1903084

Why is this important for people/environment? ✅ Well, the EU's amendment to its chemicals packaging regulations is more protective than the UK's current one, and is aimed at promoting more transparency (digital labels for example) 🚫⚠️

In this report, it was estimated the clean-up could cost between £31bn to £121bn in England alone! ⚠️ The highest costs were associated with COMAH/chemicals/refineries, WWTWs, and historic landfills Also covered for free on the ECO Chamber podcast (www.endsreport.com/article/1889087)

Last year, I uncovered a government commissioned report that estimates up to 10,200 sites are contaminated with PFAS in England (covered by @endsreport.com and @thetimes.com) ⬇️

The case will be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice in London today (no earlier than 10.30am) and on Wednesday. It is also due to be live streamed on the Court of Appeal's Youtube channel. @endsreport.com will be covering this case! I will give an update when available 🌟

The legal battle was brought by the Yorkshire-based angling club Pickering Fishery Association, represented by law firm Fish Legal 🎣 The OEP was granted permission to intervene in the case too, and it warned DEFRA that overturning the original judgment could “undermine” this area of law👮‍♀️

Due to the "generic" nature of plans to protect rivers in England, and therefore the wide ranging implications of the case, the government was granted permission to appeal⚠️ But, it still had to put in place measures to improve the Upper Costa Beck while the appeal took place (finalised last year)⭐

DEFRA and the EA were found to have failed in their legal duties to restore the Upper Costa Beck in a landmark High Court ruling in November 2023. 🧑‍⚖️ The ruling was hailed the “most significant” of its kind under the Water Framework Directive regulations in the UK! 🌊

The charity has also published it's 'Dirty Dozen' report for 2024, which lists the produce that is most likely to contain residues of two or more pesticides 🧪 Soft citrus/oranges top the list! PAN UK used government figures for 2023 to put together the report. www.pan-uk.org/site/wp-cont...

Breaking the data down further, I found out that golf courses were in the top three for number of abstraction licence breaches 2014-2023⛳ But it wasn't really a surprise... I previously found out that golf courses broke the rules 41 times in 2022- the UK's hottest year on record (story below) 🔽

My dad spent most of his 20s protesting against nuclear power (even spending a night in prison over this), which I'm sure has made me grow up with a bias against it! But my mind was opened when studying in Japan- nuclear power was largely positively viewed, despite the 2011 Fukushima disaster ...
