As I learn about hardware that was considered a failure or a “why did they do that?” kind of products, I start to appreciate the possibilities of why those decisions were made. It doesn’t make the hardware any better from a technical standpoint, but it’s a reminder nobody has a crystal ball.

On my trip to Japan earlier in the month I got a chance to ride the Shinkansen. The thing that stood out to me the most was just how _smooth_ the ride was. I barely felt anything, including accleration/braking. Compared to the local express train I took later which had rocky sections all over.

I made a comment that a developer seemed to have the mindset of "we rely on Moore's Law to cover our crappy code." Someone responded why bother with making "elegant and optimized" code when you can "solve real world problems" with code that technically works

We can always demand that software be made to work on older hardware. But in the gaming scene, I think that sort of argument is more about FOMO. Those people probably weren't going to buy those games at launch anyway, instead waiting for it to go on a >30% off sale on Steam.

I was reading an article where the author addressed a question, but suspected it was an XY Problem type of question. The author still answered the original question and what they thought was what the person really wanted to ask. I wish that was more of a thing elsewhere.

My watch: "keep up the good work with all this exercising!" Me: "I'm only doing this because I'm being a tourist..."

I feel like an interloper in the north part of Japan. I’m fine sitting indoors with a light sweatshirt and can’t stand being in heated rooms because it’s stifling. 🥲

Random nerdy thought going out into the wind: One of the things that NVIDIA touted with DLSS is it reduces latency. I was a little confused at first, but I realized why: DLSS reduces the rendering resolution, which is where the FPS boost comes from (assuming no frame generation).

Random thought stuck in my head: Mega Man 1 and 2 's wall collision code ejected Mega Man if he was inside a wall, but was changed since 3 (maybe 4) to basically be instakill I wonder if that's why there wasn't any "ceiling crush" stage mechanics until Mega Man 4.

For most modern Okinawans, Japanese is their native language. By and large, however, it wasn't the native language of their grandparents. These elders continue to speak five separate languages - and this is reflected in Okinawan names.

Knowing my monitor shifts the image ever so slightly over time is going to live rent free in my head and bug me to no end.
