I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

PROFESSORS ARE INSISTING THEIR CAMPUSES STAND UP FOR DEMOCRACY AND HIGHER EDUCATION. Today, we are releasing letters - most organized in under a week - with over 5000 signatures calling on campus leadership to stand up to Trump & fight for our values & our students. bit.ly/CampusLettersTally

Please contact us if you have information about campus abductions and visa revocations. We are tracking them live here, and are working on getting gofundme links and other ways to take action up soon. www.wearehighered.org/campus-abduc...

When the “first hundred days” coverage starts, keep this in mind. FDR’s hundred days was a special session of Congress that passed legislation to enact his agenda. The story here is *not* how active the Trump administration’s been—it’s the unprecedented and unconstitutional consolidation of power.

Everything ICE has been doing in recent weeks has been awful. But there's something about "Take him anyway" that should chill you even further to your bones.

Let this be the start of a civil society cascade of just saying no to authoritarianism.

ONE WEEK LEFT: Early registration for the 2025 ACM Web Science Conference closes April 21! #WebSci25 will be held at #Rutgers this May. For more details on our fantastic presenters and to register, visit www.websci25.org We hope you'll join us! cc: @websciencetrust.bsky.social

It has been less than three months. We’ve already reached “it is treason to assert that the 2020 election wasn’t rigged and stolen.” And it has not even been three months yet.

appeasement never works

🧵1/ Once again, I am talking about identity in communication. In a new #openaccess piece, we argue that scholars cannot meaningfully understand political communication unless we center identity. Ignoring it means missing a huge piece of the puzzle. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Heartbreaking and unacceptable. Our students deserve better.

🔥 📝 FOLKS — I'm working on a piece for Slate about the NEH cuts. If you've been affected in ANY way and would be willing to talk with me, please message me! I would love to learn more and include your story. katina [at] katinarogers [dot] com #humanities #neh #education #highered

I’ve been studying civil rights protests for 20 years. With new mobilization against Trump’s agenda, I’m sharing a thread summarizing my research on how nonviolent & violent actions by 1960s activists and police influenced media, elites, public opinion & voters. 1/ www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Today, approx. 135 of the 185 total NEH staffers woke up to the news that their positions were being RIFed. Then, almost all current grantees received emails cancelling their grants. I posted this on Fb, mostly for non-academics, but here's a bit about the impact of the 3 grants the NEH gave me: 1/

This feels like the defining image from this year’s Midwest Political Science Association annual meeting. The National Science Foundatipn paid for a booth in the exhibit hall. But the booth sits empty, because NSF has been DOGE’d, and there is no one left to send.

My newest paper, led by @smithmarisaa.bsky.social, is now out! In "The Black Pill," we find Black conservative YouTubers both echo traditional Black conservatism & shift to concerns about "anti-white racism." In the broader conservative network, their voices may legitimize white identity politics

Booker, after speaking for more than 24 hours and breaking Thurmond's record, is still standing and still speaking--using his time to warn his colleagues and his country about the dangers of defunding universities and defunding scientific research.

Happy #TransDayOfVisibility! Today and every day, we call on colleges and universities to be safe and inclusive spaces for trans students, staff, and faculty.

Everyone interested in how and where higher ed is fighting back, follow this account and/or go to WeAreHigherEd.org.

Hello, Bluesky!! We are a collective of academics who are standing up for higher education. Join us: www.wearehighered.org

I'm excited to share that I'm officially a Ph.D. candidate 🎉 Meaning I'll be on the job market this fall (gulp). My research explores human-algorithm interaction and the social impact of emerging tech at the intersection of mass communication & decision-making. #commsky #AcademicSky

Academics (and others!) want to fight back against the attacks on higher education and democracy (and diversity and civil rights and trans people and immigrants and and and...). Our letter is at bit.ly/DemocracyAndHigherEd and is designed so that ANYONE can sign. There are other letters - thread

For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.

every college, corporate, and nonprofit president right now

Paul Weiss presumably did what they would recommend a client to do: settle when litigation would be more costly even if you’re right. But when every institution cuts its own bargain with a tyrant, they all lose. That’s why they deserve the public shaming.

Friends, the 2025 ACM Web Science conference is coming up at #Rutgers this May. We have fantastic presenters and keynote speakers lined up. The schedule and registration just went live on www.websci25.org. Do come and join us! cc @websciencetrust.bsky.social @shugars.bsky.social

They're abducting people for the suspected views of their spouses in the middle of fucking Georgetown

SCOOP: Hooded ICE agents snatched Indian-born Georgetown postdoc Badar Suri from Rosslyn street Monday, per court filing. Like Khalil, linked to pro-Palestinian views & Rubio 'foreign policy' power, lawyer says. Then whisked to Louisiana. w/ @kyledcheney www.politico.com/news/2025/03...

They are coming for every university, if you think you’re safe because it hasn’t been yours yet I don’t know what to tell you. Join AAUP, refuse to comply, organize your colleagues

People who are signing have a lot of smart things to say about why this is important. This will be a thread with some of them. Please sign & share with your networks. bit.ly/DemocracyAndHigherEd "Because I am appalled by the current regime’s attack of education, academic freedom and free speech."

Please consider adding your name to this important letter reinforcing the value of higher education and academic freedom

Exciting news: registration is now open for WebSci'25! Early registration closes April 21. We hope you'll join us at Rutgers for this interdisciplinary conference dedicated to understanding the complex and multiple impacts of the web on society and vice versa Read more: www.websci25.org

New data from the Center for Political Communication at @udelaware.bsky.social shows many Americans have little trust in either Elon Musk or the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Even among Republicans... 🧵

Georgetown has put together resources for federal workers who may be facing a transition in jobs. These include various seminars and workshops, as well as tuition scholarships providing a discount on many master's programs and certificates. Please spread the word to anybody who might benefit.

Chilling report from Brown University. Administration advises all foreign students, staff, and faculty to postpone or reconsider (ie cancel) international travel, due to federal government's crackdown on universities. Brown also warns against *domestic travel* -since it's unclear what ICE will do.

If they’re doing this to white, European green card holders, just imagine what they’re doing to undocumented, indigenous Central American workers www.nhpr.org/nh-news/2025...

This letter is a direct attack on the independence of American universities. Literally seeks to use government power to dictate how private universities are organized and operated.
