ICYMI: Greens call for bold action as council prepares to set budget

Just think how many families would be spared the trauma of loss or life changing injury if only we took a harm reduction approach to both drug overdose and road danger.

As @greenparty.org.uk has been calling for since #Brexit. Could go some way to restoring rights and freedoms of young Britons. Let's keep the pressure up! Make politics what you do, not have done to you www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

I am a signatory to this. Key parts of the F-35 fighters are made in Brighton and Hove, and our residents and the city council has been commendably clear that this complicity in what they are being used for is wrong.

Brilliant from Adrian:

If we introduce tax breaks for millionaires like Nigel Farage and Richard Tice, we will not have the money to restore our NHS.

Music Venue Trust is proud to welcome six new patrons who are stepping up to support the UK’s grassroots music venues.

Beyond thrilled to be a patron of @musicvenuetrust.bsky.social! I feel reassured to have such expertise in our corner, and I’m looking forward to working together to protect the incredible grassroots music venues in Brighton Pavilion.

Expansion with a side of...expansion 🙄 These ‘economic benefits’ won’t reach anyone except Heathrow’s bosses. If Labour Ministers approve these plans, they’ll officially be making worse climate decisions than the last lot. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Thousands of my constituents use trains each day for work and leisure. I had such an interesting visit to the GTR control room. From why some trains have no wifi to improvement plans for future, it was useful to discuss issues constituents have raised with me about services.

A new low from Labour, aping Reform to further demonise migrants. Give asylum seekers the right to work to end exploitation. Create safe routes to stop criminal gangs. It’s not difficult! 🤯 www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Please repeat after me: the flood-plain is not _beside_ the river. The flood plain is part of the river www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Eating disorders are amongst the most serious and life-threatening mental illnesses but remain seriously underfunded. I support recommendations for a national strategy to address what is heartbreakingly, a growing crisis. Vital cross-party work led by @werahobhouse.bsky.social 👏

“The Hinkley C nuclear plant, which is a decade late & £30bn over budget, makes HS2 look like runaway success. If ministers want a clean, affordable, energy-secure future they should focus on renewables, not overblown, costly hype offered by the nuclear industry” www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Yesterday we were thrilled to join Enact Equality in Parliament to discuss the disproportionate effects of air pollution on racialised communities. We were delighted to hear from MPs and campaigners about the urgent need to improve air quality 🧵👇

We cannot stand by in the face of such horrific words. It is past time the UK recognised a Palestinian state, and the right of all Palestinians to self-determination and liberation.

Laughable from Labour. Reeling off a list of things you're doing for the climate, while backing airports to trash it. We need clean energy, yet expanding airports will completely kill the Clean Power Action Plan’s carbon saving benefits. When will the Government admit this??

Another brilliant coffee with politics morning @bhcompass1.bsky.social with @sianberry.bsky.social mp and Emma Montlake, environmental lawyer & campaigner talking all things environment.

Thrilled to have joined @musicvenuetrust.bsky.social (and Kate Nash!) at their report launch last week. From soaring rents to planning issues, in Brighton our incredible music venues face tough challenges and I'm pushing Govt to deliver key changes that help venues thrive, not just survive.

On the five-year anniversary of Brexit, I argue it's time to stop pretending Brexit has worked, and start building the case— boldly, confidently, and unapologetically—for returning to Europe. Read my full op-ed in the Byline Times. bylinetimes.com/2025/01/31/b...

Millions of voters live in seats that have been held by the same party for decades, or even 100 years. As a result, their issues are often ignored. @sianberry.bsky.social is right: it's unacceptable that so many people are taken for granted. We need PR so that no seat is left behind.

ICYMI: The former Green MP for Brighton Pavilion has become a trustee of a Sussex environmental charity. Caroline Lucas has joined the Cuckmere Haven SOS Trust which aims “to protect Cuckmere Haven, West Beach and cliffs for the next generation”. The charity said that the former Green Party “has a…

“The carbon cost of expanding Heathrow, Luton, and Gatwick together will cancel out the benefits of Labour’s keystone clean energy plan.” @sianberry.bsky.social went on to say quoting some @neweconomics.bsky.social research www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

According to the Chancellor, there are no easy routes to growth. But in terms of long-term jobs and benefits for the whole country, a green alternative has been sat in front of her for years... Me in The Standard today 👇 www.standard.co.uk/comment/heat...

Today I asked an Urgent Qu: why would the Govt not wait for new Climate Change Committee advice due in February before announcing new runways and bigger airports? We will see in the morning if ministers act as utterly recklessly as they have trailed…

🚨 Bad week for climate action 🛫 Labour backing airport expansion! 🚫 Landmark climate and nature legislation blocked! Want to be part of the solution? Join the only party fighting for real action on the climate crisis below ⤵️ https://join.greenparty.org.uk/

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

London landmarks lit up in purple as we remember the liberation that ended the Holocaust 80 years ago, remember those murdered in that genocide and those since, and remember to shine a light of learning into the future to make sure ‘never again’ has real meaning. #HMD2025

This Government is crossing its fingers and praying that electric planes and sustainable fuel will materialise. We cannot rely on underdeveloped technologies to decarbonise aviation. Ed Miliband knows this. This is a test of climate credibility, and Labour is failing.

2025 is THE year for big climate and nature policy decisions in the UK, and the signals are clear that this Government is already failing. #BBCLauraK

I am very proud of Carla today.

Every MP who has ever spoken up for climate and nature action should stick to their words today and vote to progress the #CANBill. Let's take this historic chance for a win-win-win that builds a fairer future for everyone while protecting our very existence.

The Speaker’s #HMD2025 event was so moving, with powerful testimony from Yisrael, who survived Auschwitz as a teenager and speaks as if it were last week not 80 years on. We must never stop building on the human rights legacy of survivors and learning the lessons of that horror.

A simple test for the Government: Do you ignore climate advice and expand airports at the whim of the aviation lobby, OR invest in the public transport we all use every day? @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social

I've spent today listening to people who attended @pscupdates.bsky.social demonstration on Saturday - some horrible experiences, descriptions of confusing guidance & disproportionate reactions from the Met as well as lies about protestors use of force www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...

Whose advice is Labour listening to? Definitely not the Govt's own climate advisors who urged a halt to all airport expansion @thecccuk.bsky.social. Fixing rampant wealth inequality will do more to build a stronger fairer economy than adding new runways that serve the frequent flying super-rich.

Trump's inauguration should mark a turning point. Time for the UK to stop trying to ride the US's coattails and start working with those who share our values and want the things we want.

👋 Hi Labour. We have an idea... Rather than taking money off disabled people - some of the poorest people in society - you could tax the super-rich properly and raise billions to help fix our crumbling public services 👍

Amazing to see the RSC's Kyoto. Powerful play reflecting on (often lack of!) climate action. The Zero Hour bill in Parliament is cosponsored by @carladenyer.bsky.social. Please write to your own MP to ensure they vote for this vital Climate & Nature bill! www.zerohour.uk/climate-and-...

The Climate and Nature Bill has its second reading this Friday 24 January. We need to ensure that the MPs who have pledged to vote keep their promise. ❗Head to action.zerohour.uk today and write to, email, call, tag or meet your MP. #CANBill 🐝 @zero-hour.bsky.social

The NHS winter crisis can't be accepted as an annual inevitability. Mental health and social care services can't meet urgent needs, meaning more patients are being kept in overcrowded hospitals. It's time for a #wealthtax to fix this mess.

A ceasefire is a vital step, but peace requires justice. The UK must act: suspend arms exports, ensure accountability, and recognise the State of Palestine. Read my full statement here: elliechowns.org.uk/2025/01/15/e...
