This feels like the beginnings of something scary.

There is still time to join a focus group and help others get started with COUNTER. Our next focus group, specifically for small and medium sized publishers, is happening on Thursday 27th February. www.countermetrics.org/join-a-focus...

Just deactivated my X account. For the past six months it's been mothballed with a bio saying pointing here. I thought it would be good to keep a signpost there but I'm glad to have fully severed that connection.

New job opportunity: Senior Research Associate Cancer Genetic Epidemiology. The post will be part of a project using GWAS and Mendelian randomization to investigate the causal effects of peri-prostatic fat volume on prostate cancer risk. Apply by 17 Mar 2025. www.bristol.ac.uk/jobs/find/de...

I'm completely astounded that the government is just silent on the collapse of the British university system. The effect isn't only on the jobs that are going, but for all those that rely on universities and will be lost over time: caterers, admin, gardeners, etc. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Trump lacks the consistency, morality, wisdom and patience to be a statesman.

🤔

Thanks to recent political developments, many have been thinking about 1930s Germany. It got me wondering what would have happened to the Nazi regime and to Germany if they hadn't started invading other countries. Interested in thoughts from people more informed about this than me.

Author of this article seems to have no idea how common such messages are. I knew from experience the kind of messages all women get. However, when I was a campaign manager in last year's parliamentary elections, I was shocked by the volume and unpleasantness of things written to female candidates.

Long conquered disease cheers stupidity of country led by idiots

OK folks, I have now created a google form that allows people to sign to show their support for my open letter to the President of the Royal Society. Please sign and share widely: forms.gle/miDciq35oxyw...

This is a great development from @bristoluni.bsky.social. I used to do detached youth work in Hartcliffe and Withywood and I'm excited that this opens up new opportunities to work with these parts of Bristol. www.bristol.ac.uk/news/2025/fe...

Yet again, if these were climate protestors, there'd have been multiple arrests, with some facing years in jail for "public nuisance". But farmers can block the road and drown out the Prime Minister and the police won't touch them. The real #TwoTierPolicing

What you are seeing this morning over the refugee decision is Labour alienating and offending its remaining liberal supporters without bringing any new voters onside.

A great piece from Carla.

I have heard of almost none of these big plans from our Government. Things that have potentially big impacts in a range of important areas of our lives.

🚨We’ll be having a Disaster Researchers for Justice meeting Thursday to discuss *gestures around*. Practitioners, journalists, students, and others who do disaster work are also welcome to join. Message Scott for info. #GreySky

👏 “After one year of the zone, nitrogen dioxide from traffic was lower, GP visits for respiratory illnesses were down by 25% and those for heart problems decreased by 24%”

An excellent and heart-breaking article on what is a short-termist and dangerous decision not only for the people who need the medicines, food and land mine clearance but also, ultimately, for the USA.

The first ever @countermetrics.bsky.social Conference was very well received last year, so we're doing it again - if you've got something you'd like to share about usage metrics, the Conference is your time to shine!

Spot on

“The first indications that 20mph zones could bring down the cost of car insurance – as well as cutting speeds and reducing road casualties – came in June last year, when the car insurer Esure reported that vehicle damage claims in Wales fell by a fifth after the default limit was introduced.”

There was so much news from the US this weekend, ranging from troubling overreaching (since when were email signatures part of a presidential remit?) to globally shocking (what has happened with USAID is so scary and sad). And the power of Musk in it all! We need media to report it for what it is.

This will be a great opportunity to learn a bit about what we do in @uob-ieu.bsky.social and how you can get involved.

Our journal checklist in Hindi needs to be updated. We don’t yet have a translation of our checklist for books and chapters. Please DM if you are a Hindi speaker and can help with translation. bit.ly/40GEHb9

Interesting - and positive - news from @universityofleeds.bsky.social.

We have an exciting new opportunity to support COUNTER's vision of a world where knowledge is advanced through trusted usage metrics.

As the ceasefire comes into effect and the Palestinian people return to nothing but rubble, now is not the time to be looking away from Gaza. The occupation of Palestine must now end and all perpetrators of the genocide must be brought to justice.

The US inauguration speech makes disturbing listening.

Something weirdly enigmatic about this image. Zuckerberg, Bezos and Musk have a combined net worth of around $874 billion. They're the living definition of the "globalist elite". What an incredible con trick Donald Trump has pulled off. #TrumpInauguration #TrumpInauguration2025

For Blue Monday we can't think of anything more appropriate than this charming depiction of a man getting his face eaten off by a leopard. #MosaicMonday

“President-elect Trump is all hot air – literally. With CO2 levels rocketing, and global heating intensifying, the last thing we need is a vain man’s fantasy politics” yorkshirebylines.co.uk/news/world/p...

We are excited to share that our 2025 COUNTER conference will be on 5th June. The theme is "Measuring usage of non-controlled content" and we are now calling for papers. Do get in touch by 28th Feb if you have an idea for a talk. www.countermetrics.org/call-for-pap...

There's a story behind the photos of people in Greenland with MAGA hats: "Trump's people 'bribed' the homeless and the socially disadvantaged with hotel dinners to play Trump supporters" www.dr.dk/nyheder/udla...

Just saw a no-longer relevant evacuation notice on instagram from five hours ago and remembered — that’s right, due to hyper-monetization every major social network no longer shows you life-saving breaking news as it happens. They turned it over to an algorithm that finally noticed “he likes fire.”
