Hey look - @childlegalwales.bsky.social is here!!!!

The new Borders Bill hits the next stage in Parliament this week. It's a set of new laws that repeat the same mistakes we've seen time and time again. If you want laws that protect, not punish, people seeking safety, join our fight for asylum rights at: fighttheantirefugeelaws.org/new-borders-...

Today's forgotten computer: The Hyperion. Launched the same year as the Compaq portable, but couldn't match it in IBM compatibility (both on software and disk drives). So ultimately failed. A bit of a "what if" moment. If it had won that battle, Canada would have been the home to IBM's main rival.

Great piece of insightful, detailed reporting here by @johnhyde.bsky.social on the state of just one court building. A lot of what he says here can be said of many courts. A micro story making a macro point. Our local court system is in a state of collapse. www.lawgazette.co.uk/news-focus/i...

On a round trip of 14 miles, Mr D has encountered two crashes...could everyone just wind it back a bit maybe...

companies listening to what people say they want instead of making art and just giving them something has been ruinous for games, movies and more for the last 10-15 years

Lovely to have my S.O.P.H.I.E vest recognised on parkrun yesterday.

Dropping some #anglerfish factoids: Anglerfish teeth are curved backward. So if something tries to escape, it just shoves itself deeper into the mouthal abyss of doom. 🌊🦑 #Anglerfish #Evolution #Science

A resident of Richard Burton's home village has expressed her disappointment after discovering that there will be no local, or even Welsh premiere of the forthcoming biopic which features a lead cast from England ✍️ Stephen Price

In my first year at Warwick I lived in (old) rootes. There was a long running duck love triangle happening on the grounds and one afternoon it came to a head, cheered/booed by all of the kitchens - who has all picked sides...

This is a very good read about a puppygirl in a cage! ....okay maybe not the kind you'd expect for me to boost, but still!

Ooh that’s good. Folklore develops for a reason (many reasons, but including “you will meet these types of people” reasons)

Shocking, but sadly not surprising. The discourse and behaviour seen at Cardiff is the same everywhere now.

If you have GCSE/sixth formers in your lives interested in a taster day about studying with @rhulclassics.bsky.social, our next taster day on Normal People: Life and Love in the Ancient World will be on Thursday 10th July. More details, including talk titles, here:

Nate Silver 🤝 Noah Smith Knowing nothing about the past, skimming Wikipedia and not doing the reading, and assuming they’ve invented a new way of understanding human history

I think I'm the only person at this gig who's come to see the band I'm here for...

Nazi salutes are having a moment. Our critic weighs in. Steve Bannon’s offered precise form worthy of 1930s Germany, but Elon Musk’s honored the drug-fueled mania of the original Nazis.

Movie you watched more than six times, gifs only

Mr D has just booked tickets for Knightmare live in October. Along with Uncanny live and Magnus Archives live its shaping up to be a helluva spooky season...

At one point in the first year of my PhD I took myself off to see Insidious 5 as I was that desperate for sensory input. I had not seen any of the others but assumed I could probably keep up. I kept up just fine.

Going down memory lane when the migrants' right movement was unafraid to do some real campaigning. And when Labour had a strong values-based voice. Wondering if we would be able to get this strong a vocal outcry just 5 years later. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-poli...

true story i get A LOT of death threats depending on what book is blowing up. number one was harriet porber and two any tromp books. i talk a lot on artistic reasons for wearing mask but one i do not talk about often is SAFETY. with amount of death threats i get it is often VERY nice to not be known

The new Immigration Bill will make asylum & human rights claims from Albania inadmissible. But these measures ignore the reality of blood feuds, LGBTQ+ persecution, and modern slavery, as our new report with @micluteam.bsky.social and Shpresa reveals ⬇️ publiclawproject.org.uk/resources/pu...

An official Neon Genesis Evangelion XR game is in development, kicking off a trilogy based on the anime TV series starting next year:

Much garbling of constitutional history in this piece. Ireland was not administered by the Home Office in the C19, it was pretty famously still run by the Viceroy and Chief Secretary. After partition, NI was initially under the Colonial Office (cue Unionist ire): www.irishnews.com/opinion/bria...

My top 5 legal films, not that anyone asked Red Rooms In the name of the Father Witness for the Prosecution Miracle on 34th Street (1947) A Matter of Life and Death (which is also one of the only two perfect films ever made)

If you played TTRPGs between 1970-2004, PhD Candidate Geoffrey Ramirez (Binghamton U) is seeking participants for “Character Creation: The Tabletop Role-Players Oral History Project” as part of his dissertation. Interviews will be archived at the Strong Museum of Play (can be time-locked, etc)

"The standard of good character required to become an ordinary British citizen should not be more demanding than for the highest offices of state, especially not when it’s a means to an end that has nothing to do with character at all."

If you haven't listened to this week's podcast episode featuring Joe Cornish, it's a banger! Here are Joe's three childhood scars (and the podcast link is in our bio) 1) The magnificent 1975 BBC paranormal documentary THE GHOST HUNTERS, especially 'the sigh'...

🚨1 in 3 children living in deep poverty are migrant children. This is not a coincidence. Hostile immigration policies drive migrant families into poverty. Tell this Government to protect EVERY child from poverty. Take action: act.praxis.org.uk/email-minist...

For the last few weeks, every Monday from 0.00 am to about 2 am my site has been getting thousands of hits (5-7,000) from what appears to be a content scraper - probably AI related - and a very ill mannered one (multiple source IP addresses, fake user agents & platforms).

Planning is now underway with gusto & (despite budget concerns) it will hopefully be as brilliant as last year - celebrating the amazing kids who see off all the competition to compete on stage with Alex 🏆 Shoutout to the fabulous team of legends below, without whom it just wouldn't be possible 👏

Absolutely spot-on & unvarnished comments from @richardwynjones.bsky.social about the dire state of the university sector and the long-term prognosis absent any *serious* reconsideration by Welsh Gov about how they fund universities and what - in truth - HE is actually *for*. (full interview below)
