“The Connecticut General Assembly approved, over the weekend, H.B. 5002, an ambitious, surprisingly bold housing bill….The legislation includes some unexpected wins on many fronts, including taking the step of eliminating most parking mandates for residential housing,…”

San Diego City Council approves parking reform package, including 'dynamic pricing' The San Diego City Council has approved a parking reform package that includes 'dynamic pricing.' This initiative aims to modernize the city's parking policies and gener…

There is a committee hearing on these zoning bills today, including eliminating parking minimums for the more flexible zoning districts. Land use reform bills, however, have not been introduced at all. www.inquirer.com/real-estate/...

The Bremerton City Council just voted 6-1 to become the fourth Washington city to completely drop any mandated off-street parking in new development, following in the steps of Spokane, Port Townsend, and Bellingham.

“Parking is absolutely a hindrance to home construction. Without a doubt, this is a huge opportunity for the City of Bremerton to be the leader in the county and in western Washington.” Jake Carter director of construction for Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County www.theurbanist.org/2025/06/06/b...

“Brookfield is investing in Stonestown & plans a massive 3,500-unit housing project approved last year to replace parking lots in what would be the biggest west side development in 50 years. An additional 150,000 sf of shops, restaurants & entertainment as well as parks are planned over 2 decades.”

“What unfolded at this second protest was a perfect distillation of how wealthy, largely white neighborhood groups across California that profess to value inclusion too often use their sway to ensure that their neighborhoods remain unattainable to anyone who doesn’t already live there.” So true.

“I looked at every garage from #Berkeley to #Oakland to #SanFrancisco, all the way down to #SanJose,” Jenkins said. “What I learned is that there is nobody parking on top of a single garage in the #BayArea. They are all dead. And many of them have closed the top several floors.”

When I led the Downtown #Berkeley Parking & Transportation Demand Management Plan, I recommended managing the existing parking supply better instead of building more. Sadly, the city built a new garage at great cost. Today, it’s an underused money-loser. At least we might get more Pickleball fun!

Here's the map of senators that voted for more housing around transit in California. It passed with exactly the 21 votes needed, nothing more. 3 of those votes were republicans. We need more bipartisanship to get these kinds of reforms over the finish line.

SB79 passes because of Bay Area and bipartisan rural vote. LA politicians remain fundamentally unserious about solving our housing crisis.

My colleagues & I have spent decades helping cities plan & build transit-oriented neighborhoods around the Bay Area. People like them once they get to live in them! I hope our efforts helped persuade a few senators to vote for allowing more homes near transit. In LA, we clearly have work to do…

Scott Wiener is one step closer to getting the transit-oriented development bill he's advocating for since 2018: www.mercurynews.com/2025/06/04/s...

Today was a very good day for Californians who want to be able to live in a neighborhood where they can easily walk, bicycle, or transit to meet their daily needs. It was a good day for Californians who want to spend less time stuck in traffic and less money on gas. #SB79

“Thomas is challenging Code Enforcement Officer Gary Goss’s ruling that Thomas’s proposed village center development is out of compliance with…parking requirements….as Thomas sees it, Goss’s math is incorrect.” We should spend less time debating parking mandates & more time managing curb parking!

“According to the company’s own data, #Waymo drivers are involved in 81% fewer injury crashes than the average human motorist covering the same distance in #SanFrancisco” I’d like to live in a place where this sentence began, “According to data collected & independently verified by public servants…

Great news for #SanDiego!Performance-based parking prices will make it easier to find a space, reduce traffic created by people circling in search of underpriced curb parking, and raise money to support important public services. fox5sandiego.com/news/local-n...

So proud of CT! A great example of shooting for the moon and landing in the stars.

I asked about critiques of #SB607. @cselmendorf.bsky.social answered. The bill reforms the California Environmental Quality Act ( #CEQA ) to speed approvals for environmentally friendly and environmentally neutral projects...

As a proud fifth-generation Californian, I’m embarrassed to see us falling behind national leaders on reforms that make housing more affordable, benefit the environment, and increase social equity. @governor.ca.gov and @scottwiener.bsky.social, let’s fix this!

NIMBYs love striving toward ever more absurd arguments against housing. In this email against our bill to allow more homes near transit, they argue it’s “unconstitutional” & “discriminates against those who cannot rely on transit,” including “families with young children & disabled people.” 🙄 🧵

Federal highway safety grants should reward states for implementing measures that reduce drunk driving (removing minimum parking mandates for establishments that sell alcohol, charging for parking, etc.). Preventing drunk driving is better than arresting lots of drunks.

If you know someone who thinks the laws of supply and demand don’t apply to housing, ask them to read this article. Ask, “Why are for-profit builders slashing prices in regions with high vacancy rates & raising them in regions with low vacancy rates⁉️” www.fastcompany.com/91316401/hou...

I have mixed feelings about underground parking. It can give me easy auto access to places with good urbanism, like SF‘s Union Square. But the cost is high to both pocketbook & planet. One must dig a giant pit, truck tons of dirt, pour thick concrete walls, & (often) run dewatering pumps for decades
