I don't think it helps that they have the, like, pre-generated prompts ("Hi, is this still available?"), because it makes for low effort messaging, but that doesn't answer the question of why bother to do even that in the first place.

I can believe it. I once sold an entire apartment's worth of furniture on FB when we moved out of the West End. The ratio of sketchy accounts to genuine messages of interest must have been 5:1 easily. That was in 2019 and it's only gotten worse since then, I think.
