Yes - this is why I typically use the name “roulette wheel” to refer to the function that draws weighted random samples in my code. (I think I came across this analogy in a genetic algorithms text book but would love to know if it’s more widespread…)

I think the SNP run Scottish government is a good example. They have consistently been very vocally and passionately pro immigration, attempting to gain more control over our borders in order to let more migrants and refugees in. They have been in power here for 18 years, so it’s not hurt them.

These are great! Number 10 feels particularly important as we’re learning the fragility of relying upon vast infrastructure companies who are beholden to states that we once thought of as friendly.

This is a great question that I should probably let @ellengarland.bsky.social answer, but one piece of evidence is that only the males sing, which is similar to other cases of display behaviour in nature that are more about competition for mates than about conveying semantics.
