Hi Roeland, I think you were already in there? But you are definitely in the pack now.

I acknowledge your post but am reluctant to "like" it.
We received an email today saying we need to cut £140M from the university budget, a number which appears to have been conjured out of thin air.

Don't worry, there is a link to the staff wellbeing hub.

Have you considered that the email was in response to your post?

I'm not sure what the numbers are in England for home vs international students, but
at Edinburgh around a quarter of the students are Scotland domiciled, from which the university derives 1/20th of its tuition income.

5 points to you sir.
I was walking through this village, minding my own business, and a man stopped me and said "are you from the University?"
Bewildered, I said "I work at a university."
He said: "You should spend more time studying God."

Well, I took the liberty of rounding up. Thanks for posting the chart so the overall numbers are clear.

"home domicile" means Scottish students. About 1/4 of the university's students are Scottish, from which it derives 1/20 of its tuition income.

It is amazing. It is a good thing I am a geomorphologist, and looking at and thinking about these images is my job. Otherwise this extension would result in a substantial decrease in my productivity.

As of July 31st 2023 there was £456M in cash, and EBITDA of 10.7% (this was the headline in the 2023 annual statement).
Looks like 2024 annual statement will also report a big surplus.

But a big drop in international students in 24/25 would be bad

He looks like this (the image is a drawing, not a photo. I was not able to get a photograph of him).

Oh, I just meant that it is so consistently windy that it is almost impossible to use an umbrella. Edinburgh ranks very high on the global "cities where an umbrella will turn inside out" ranking.
I hope you got a great view from up there.

Umbrellas are completely useless here unless your ambition is to use one as a kite.

Another note on non-dom: the argument in favour was it incentivised the very rich to come to the UK. But if you were non-dom you got taxed on remittance: i.e. money brought to the UK. So it incentivised the very rich to come to the UK but disincentivised bringing their money here to spend.

It should be noted that those of us who had a working life in another country before moving to the UK, but cannot afford £30-£60k per year on non-dom status, have always had to pay UK tax on worldwide income and will continue to do so. This closes a loophole only available to the very, very rich.

I use this ad in my 1st year physical geography course. This company evolved into Exxon.
The next slide is about the excellent predictions of warming made by Exxon scientists in 1982 as described in this paper: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
