Agreed. What could be more “democratic” (in theory) than “the will of the people”?

It’s the contemporary version of the trains running on time

O brave new world that has such synthetic respondents in it

Call me naive and old-fashioned, but I’m still at the stage of: “Why would anyone even consider ‘replacing’ human participants with LLMs?” (Although of course I know the answer.)

Won’t it be too late for eugenics if you’ve already done the sex?

No value is placed on what happens when we let it; only on what we make happen. It’s the root of so many problems.

This idiotic cult of Musk that the media has created and endlessly recycled has done tremendous damage.

Indeed! I also liked the shoes. And the illustration of Lord M’s experience.

The selection and captioning of photos is especially good

Long pieces on niche subjects are my main reason for being here. Loved it. Thanks for writing and sharing.

Did you buy it?

I’ve long been of the opinion that there are only around 1,000 people in London, and that the rest are done with mirrors. Who ARE these supposed other people? Why do I never bump onto any of them randomly in the street?

What I can never work out is how you find time to respond while still writing so many (good) books.

I trust you are excluding MY new Theory of Everything, which differs from all the others in that it actually resolves millennia of philosophical and scientific debate and pinpoints the one thing everyone else has missed.

This is so clear. As a complete layman/ignoramus, I read this and thought about Kant. I don’t remember him mentioning time, but something about this reminded me of the stuff in the CoPR (read years ago) about “bringing the manifold to concepts”. Am I being totally crazy here?

I have badgered her on Twitter to come over here. Maybe we should organise a friendly “pile-on”!

Worst rated by whom? Given all the revolting foods on the planet, how can a sardine sandwich possibly come second?

Although the same appears to be true of elected politicians, and we put them in charge of public services…

Collective weltschmerz? Although personally I have wondered how much of this feeling is just me and many of those I talk to becoming middle aged.

Cf massive investment in carbon capture. It’s all pretty dispiriting.

I missed this particular one but always think Alex Forsyth is brilliant at her job when I listen. It’s the only one of these panel shows I can think of that is still worth catching.

Fluoride is Kennedy’s department. Lunacy has a corporate structure these days.

… or landowners *with a Telegraph mindset* - as plenty of (good) landowners will also welcome what the NT is doing. (Indeed, the NT itself is a landowner isn’t it?)

Sounding a bit ancien regime there, @philipcball.bsky.social. Watch out or those pesky internet sans culottes will be after you. Now, pass me that periwig…

Kind of glad I’ve missed them. So dispiriting.

Not surprised - but who’s doing that? Where?

I think you should be required to re-repost without the bashful disclaimer. Great book, high praise warranted.

Weird logic in the abstract, no? “We found that, across pointy metal objects in general, hammers were more effective than screwdrivers. Builders should therefore use hammers.” (Also, isn’t it a good idea to get someone to consent - knowledge, attitude, emotion - before you tinker with their habits?)

Dedicated Holster here. A friend and I used to sing the two versions at the same time for fun. It’s… well, try it with someone.

Inspiring. Thanks for reposting.

I’d love that. Let me know when you’re in town.

Doesn’t it. I was late to Twitter and loved it for a while. This place feels like it’s gaining the momentum. 🤞

I believe it may have been Megan (?) he credited for the concept. He was clear it wasn’t his originally - but was of course a genius in how he developed it.

You might want to chat to Alan Cribb about “spaciousness”. Went to his seminar last week and it was inspiring. (Don’t think he’s on here though.)
