A new study from MIT’s Media Lab (not yet peer-reviewed & small sample size): ChatGPT May Be Eroding Critical Thinking Skills. [time.com]

Yes. I am right. I am seeing how Chat GPT is ruining students critical thinking and writing skills in real time. It is not the future. It is a tool designed to render the populace helpless, to make people doubt their innate intelligence, and to foster overreliance on technology.

It’s good that literary fiction is dying. Literary fiction isn’t real or it's a ghost. Look, I know I’m just a librarian and don’t know anything about how to categorize information, especially books, but “literary fiction” has only existed since that dude from Bantam Books coined the term in 1976.

That pole is MASSIVE. Look how it distorts spacetime around it

“Over the past 20 years, and especially over the past five, the Advanced Placement program has turned into a testing regime more than anything else. And the way that this affects especially the humanities, I think, precludes possibilities for a meaningful liberal arts education in high school.”

“The AP English writing rubrics used to be holistic, less than ten years ago. Now there are check-boxes for elements of an essay. And you don’t even have to really write a complete essay to check all the boxes.”

Freedom! 🕊️

voters in huntington beach just rejected their book-ban board. said no to censorship. no to privatized libraries. when people show up, bans fall.

the destruction of chattel slavery is one of the great accomplishments in our nation's history and the reason conservatives hate celebrating it is because doing so legitimizes the black counter-narrative of the united states

Good morning, my loves. Happy Thursday. It's Juneteenth. A day for truth and history to be revealed. May your truth be as celebratory.

As we recognize #Juneteenth, the day marking the end of slavery in the U.S., it’s important that students have access to insightful books that reflect our nation’s past. Check out these Read Across America books that bring Black history to life in age-appropriate & accurate ways:

Want to fight book bans and protect students’ right to read? One of the most powerful tools is your voice. This guide shows how to make an impact at school board meetings—in just 30 seconds to 3 minutes. www.freedomtoreadproject.org/speaking_up_...

Today we honor Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation — more than two years after issued. As educators, we recognize the importance of teaching accurate history and continuing the work for equity and justice.

This interview @frankstrong.bsky.social does with Annie Abrams is REALLY eye-opening. It taps into something I've talked about here and have experience, which is an utter lack of curiosity or willingness to *learn* by otherwise smart folks. franklinstrong.substack.com/p/students-w...

if i can be y’all’s dad for a second: one of the most important things I’ve learned is that acquiring a skill is literally uncomfortable that awful moment where you feel confused and stupid and embarrassed? it means you’re about to learn something. and it’s *mandatory* if you want to get better

“Emails and internal communications obtained by the Associated Press reveal a disturbing pattern: political and donor pressure — reportedly incited by powerful politicians — has led university leaders to mute research exposing racial and economic disparities in the petrochemical industry.”

“Books typically take between two and three years to publish. If publishers follow in the suit of major companies turning away from – or staying silent – on DEI, we may not see the effect until years down the line.”

I dunno if this one does, but it is where I am going right now...

Regarding this surprising distinction, I’m just one of many, many people fighting for our freedoms. I would still be shouting into the void if NJ State Sen. @andrewzwicker.bsky.social hadn’t listened & taken action. I’m thankful for his public service & commitment to intellectual freedom. 2025/

Trump’s Big Ugly Bill is getting worse. The House bill takes nutrition benefits away from millions, but that’s not cruel enough. So the Senate bill also ends policies that helped vets, homeless people, and foster youth receive SNAP. All for tax cuts for the rich. thehill.com/homenews/sen...

Thank the heavens

personal note: I have retired my old social media handle. For those of you from the old place, you know I've had it for a number of years. And as much as I still love the youthful spirit of it, it's time to move on. This new one feels fitting—

Hazelwood, who is originally from Italy and now resides in the U.S., was booked for several international appearances before she canceled because "it's not possible for me to safely travel outside and then back inside the US," she wrote on Instagram.

Some have mentioned the losing argument in Loving as a guide to Skrmetti. The better analogy may be a long-forgotten case from the 1880s, Pace v. Alabama. Southern states, including Alabama, had passed laws barring interracial intimacy as part of their effort to reinstate racial hierarchy.

I love how relatable this show is
