A judge ruled EPA termination of environmental justice grants was unlawful. EPA cannot “thumb its nose at Congress” by refusing to spend appropriated funds, the judge wrote.

Re Mahmoud v Taylor: “Once you open the door to ideologically based opt-outs, you’ve created a roadmap to curriculum censorship … That’s exactly how censorship creeps in through the back door: quietly, ‘reasonably,’ and a little at a time.”

Y’all, I’m sorry but I think someone needs to talk to MeeScan’s conference swag team.

Hey! It's June 13th so here is your semi-regular reminder that if you have something to say about Readers' Advisory, and you want to say it in print, Becky and I are guest editors for a Library Trends issue dedicated to RA! Abstract submissions are due AUGUST 1. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

When Dobbs came down, the media rightly saw it as the culmination of a decades long effort to eliminate abortion rights by the conservative legal movement. When Skrmetti came down, the media blamed trans people and not that same conservative legal machine. It's the same court and lawyers.

You know you’re a toddler parent when your child is addicted to strawberries and bananas and you are their supplier.

LA DODGERS just now: “This morning, ICE agents came to Dodger Stadium and requested permission to access the parking lots. They were denied entry to the grounds by the organization. Tonight’s game will be played as scheduled.” Right on, Dodgers! More of this, please.

Between this and infielder Christian Koss wearing a Read Banned Books shirt, I may have to become a Dodgers fan!

Trump and the GOP want to make it easier for criminals to buy guns. It’s that simple. This will decimate our communities. We will fight back. The party of law and order is a lie and a joke. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/18/u...

Finally, a Holy War I can join

I’m mostly trying to stay offline today, so I’m finally opening my “pool” for the season. It’s a cheap, smallish, inflatable thing that I bought last summer. I’ve spent 5x as much on a pump, filters, chemicals, etc, but it brings me joy.

The library will be closed today because it's a holiday that deserves to be celebrated. The doors will be locked and rattle proof.

Florida and Texas presage what we will eventually see across the nation in censorship. It's important to pay attention, and to support our colleagues there doing the work of protecting #freadom.

A wise person knows that the best way to fight fascism is to fight fascism. Not to give into it piecemeal. The person who thinks that we just need to find the right sacrifice to feed to the fascists in order to appease them is, at best, a collaborator.

I think I wanna change my last answer to "languidly looking!" That is so perfect.

A new study from MIT’s Media Lab (not yet peer-reviewed & small sample size): ChatGPT May Be Eroding Critical Thinking Skills. [time.com]

Yes. I am right. I am seeing how Chat GPT is ruining students critical thinking and writing skills in real time. It is not the future. It is a tool designed to render the populace helpless, to make people doubt their innate intelligence, and to foster overreliance on technology.

It’s good that literary fiction is dying. Literary fiction isn’t real or it's a ghost. Look, I know I’m just a librarian and don’t know anything about how to categorize information, especially books, but “literary fiction” has only existed since that dude from Bantam Books coined the term in 1976.
