Check out our new paper on inclusive fieldwork! As The Forces That Be try to make science more exclusionary, fostering accessible, equitable, and diverse research teams is resistance. Be the change you want to see in your world. The #JoyOfMolluscs is for everyone 🐌✊ doi.org/10.4003/006....

"While individual stressors have taxon-specific and sometimes positive impacts, eutrophication and species invasions have collectively decimated the native mollusc community over the past century" Karatayev et al. 2025. doi.org/10.1007/s10530-025-03540-5

The value of #NaturalHistoryCollections lies in the provenance data, which can reveal the hundreds of thousands of hidden hands behind the prominent few who are attributed as the 'collectors'. This paper provides data that can be applied across so many different disciplines #CollectionsMatter 🌏🧪

New paper out ! We call here for better integration of earthworms—a taxon extensively studied for its functions—into conservation biology, by highlighting gaps in earthworm ecology and proposing approaches to achieve this goal. in Open access ! doi.org/10.1016/j.bi...

"Struck by Cupid's arrow!" 🐌 The majority of land snails are hermaphroditic, with fully functioning male and female reproductive organs. Some species enact a bizarre courtship ritual involving "love" darts. More 👉 Natural History #ValentinesDay eCards: www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/natu...

📢Early Career Researcher Symposium Later this month we have a range of ✨FREE✨ online talks covering a huge range of topics on the history of natural history. 📅Thursday 20 February 🙌Free 💻Online Check out the link below for more information, including how to book your ticket! See you there! 🥰

After working on it for years, I just gave my first author-talk about my book, #NaturesMemory: Behind the Scenes at the World’s Natural History #Museums. It's out in a few months - it's awesome to start to build some interest. (The talk was for @penguinpress.bsky.social, so a fairly biased audience)

Two newly described mollusc species, named Punk ferox and Emo vorticaudum, presented in Nature, indicate that early molluscs were more diverse than previously thought. The spiky, wormlike fossils were found in England and date to around 430 million years ago. https://go.nature.com/4h9lu8L 🧪

We made it! We followed the white butterfly, leaving the scratchy letter behind. Please bear with us though, it might take a bit of time to sort out a posting rota… However, we need a lovely nat sci coll banner picture. If you’ve got a good one please send it to us by end of Jan 🙂

Molluscs sighted at the National Museum in Bangkok last month. Prehistoric shell earrings, relatively modern shell toys, a cowrie shell at a display of how royal laundry was done in the past (shell possibly used to smoothen out cloth?), intricate mother-of-pearl objects. #MolluscMonday

link.springer.com/article/10.1... One month ago we published a paper was published on the decline of taxonomic expertise, using the example of Hungary, based on several lines of evidence. My Hungarian colleagues compiled a wealth of data. The paper is open access in Biodiversity and Conservation.

Aquaculture is an important activity sector for many countries. Unfortunately, it can also be the source of #bioinvasions. Focusing on crustaceans, our last paper presents a very simple framework to limit these invasions: dx.doi.org/10.1111/raq.... Avec Elena Manfrini & @bleroyecology.bsky.social

My entire team wrote an opinion paper about Common misconceptions of speciation research. Each section is written by 1-2 team members. The bulk of the writing happened during two writing retreats. It was a lot of fun and I am very happy with the result. academic.oup.com/evolinnean/a...

📣Call for Papers!🚨 Natural History Collections are vital stores of information, and can aid various fields of #Biodiversity science such as #Ecology, #Taxonomy & #GlobalChange biology! Yet, the Global South is often underrepresented, despite the important research being done in these regions.

Earlier this year, I received news that fake peer reviews were allegedly being submitted impersonating me and approximately six others I shared my story with Science to, hopefully, reduce the chance of this kind of breach happening again www.science.org/content/arti...

hey everyone! i made a list of some useful starter packs (primarily biology/earth sciences with a few bonus things thrown in) to share with friends who have joined bsky in the last week and thought it may be useful for some people here too! 🌍🧪 #SciSky #BioSky docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Dr. Kathleen Carpenter (1891-1970), "the mother of freshwater ecology", was a pioneer freshwater scientist who wrote the first English textbook on freshwater ecology (Life in Inland Waters, 1928). Her book discusses foodweb interactions - and even mentions zebra mussel invasions. ...🧵1/n

If you can't do a review, pls decline and if possible, recommend alternatives—this would greatly help overwhelmed editors. As an editor for a small, unknown journal, getting reviewers can take months. We often won't know if invited reviewers are ignoring us, or if our emails got sent to junk mail...

Couldn’t find the original thread from the other place, but I've tried to put together here what I can remember about my advice on publishing—specifically, in philosophy journals—based on working on four journals, for (gulp) well over a decade now.

We’re still predicted to take 120 years before we get close to describing all of the #earthworm species on the plant. We need more earthworm taxonomists… 🧪 #earthworms #invertebrates #taxonomy #soilbiology #research #annelida 🌍 🪱 www.newscientist.com/article/2451...
