Spending $20M per year to protect a multibillion dollar fishery is obviously a wise investment - as is apparent to anyone whose intelligence has not been eroded by extremist political ideology. www.greatlakesnow.org/2025/02/trum...

New paper out in @conphysjournal.bsky.social! We show that pond drying 💧 during the tadpole period has carry-over costs on metamorph jumping ability 🐸 | doi.org/10.1093/conp...

Past and present members of our lab at the @scas-scsa.bsky.social meeting.

Today PhD student Meagan Harper from our team at @envevidencecanada.bsky.social @carletonu.bsky.social scored the best presentation award at the @scas-scsa.bsky.social meeting! The presentation was a synthesis of work she has done on tipping points in freshwater systems. Congrats!

Journals/publishers/editors r having to act 2 protect US govt colleagues serving in roles as editors, referees & authors. We r essentially creating firewalls so those editors don't handle papers on topics like climate change & DEI + not sending to US govt referees. What r u doing to protect people?

It is tough to do sea lamprey control in the US waters of the Great Lakes when front line control agents are fired. Just one of the consequences associated with random terminations of environmental professionals in the US. www.bridgemi.com/michigan-env...

At this point, many of us have seen our former students, our friends, our colleagues, lose their jobs without just cause. Science, public health, public safety, air safety, fire control, and far more, are being undermined. So, what can YOU do, right now? What can academic societies do? ... we can...

ESRI is updating their basemaps automatically to incorporate The Gulf of America starting tomorrow 2/20. Unrelatedly, here's a workflow that you can use to manually edit your vector basemap labels: www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/...

I harbour a fair amount of hatred towards AI. However, I have equal despise for being asked to create a "graphical abstract" for academic papers. Does anyone have recommendations for which AI tool to explore for creating a graphical abstract? I would disclose AI use for that purpose in the paper.

We approach productivity in science in a longitudinal fashion: We track scientists’ careers over time, up to 40 years. We allocate scientists to decile-based productivity classes, from the bottom 10% to the top 10%. We show patterns of mobility btw the classes. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Help! What are some examples (from around the globe) where there have been "success stories" in improving water quality for the benefit of freshwater biodiversity? Could be regs, technical innovations, incentives, etc. I am finding lots of "partial" successes. @davetickner.bsky.social

New partnership between our Canadian Centre for Evidence-Informed Conservation @envevidencecanada.bsky.social at @carletonu.bsky.social and @cdnsciencepub.bsky.social. Goal is to support the broader community of evidence generators, synthesizers and users. See: cdnsciencepub.com/do/10.1139/n...

Back in Bergen for meetings on sharks and salmon thanks to funding from the Norwegian Science Foundation to NORCE and IMR.

Sad state of affairs that such guidance is needed.

I was looking for someone with a particular skill set to invite as co-author on a synthesis paper. I read a few of their papers and was about to send invite and decided to do a quick check on Pub Peer only to discover that they have a PILE of retractions for sketchy data. No thanks!

I found a quiet corner in the AC Cafe at YYZ on a snowy day to watch kids hockey online and hammer on the to do list.

Happy to share that my paper on creativity in research labs is out in the "Ten Simply Rules" article series. Ten simple rules for fostering creativity in research labs I hope you find it to be useful. #AcademicSky journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...

We spoke to a dozen conservation and aid workers across the world about the aid pause and its effect on their work. My report for @mongabay.bsky.social news.mongabay.com/2025/02/acro...

While kiddo was at hockey practice I was working in the local library and this book was staring at me. Fun opportunity to learn more about an organization that I belong to.

Sad to learn of the passing of Dr. William Mitsch. Bill authored the textbook "Wetlands" which was used in undergrad class I took. I interacted with Bill in his role as Editor in Chief of journal Ecological Engineering & hosted him for seminar at Carleton. Big loss. www.dispatch.com/obituaries/p...

For those of you who knew or studied with Dr. Bill Mitsch: www.dispatch.com/obituaries/p...

Friends, colleagues and partners in US govt natural resource management/env science agencies that are in a precarious position or already terminated. Sadly there is not much I can do other than to offer my services as reference letter writer when you take your awesomeness elsewhere. Lean on us.

I am sporting a bit of a black eye from walking into a wall in a hotel room while visiting the bathroom in the middle of the night - proof that blackout blinds are highly effective and that I have poor spatial awareness.

I've said it before... killing the CBC when the U.S. is using U.S. owned media to propagandize for the destruction of Canada would be smashing all the fire alarms when an arsonist has threatened to burn your house down.

"I don't think plastic is going to affect a shark very much, as they're munching their way through the ocean". Quote from the orange turnip re why paper straws are being side-lined in favour of plastic straws.🤦

Glad to see the government focusing on the most pressing issues of the day 🙄 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/c...

It's official - the @amfisheriessoc.bsky.social magazine-style journal Fisheries academic.oup.com/fisheries has now fully transitioned to our new publisher - @oxfordunipress.bsky.social Oxford Univ Press. Check us out!

Scientists, it’s been a rough week. And honestly, we don’t lift each other up enough—especially when it comes to mental health. Our careers are built on repetitive rejection of papers, grants, and jobs. That doesn’t define you. You and your science are incredible. Just wanted to remind you of that.

I am always blown away at the extent of global fish tracking in partnership with @oceantracking.bsky.social

Enjoying BC wine tonight rather than my usuals. I appreciate that the orange turnip has forced me to re-visit some of the closer-to-home options!
