Y'days post: A New World Order mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/a-ne... Many European voters who might otherwise support a populist party may see with Trump what the reality of populist government entails and decide that is not to their liking.

Kicking off his presentation @alexclegg.bsky.social looks at the internatioanal picture on child poverty. For a rich country the UK has a pretty terrible record. We are among the worst of advanced economies when it comes to the share of our children living below the poverty line. This must change.

Very interesting, relative to my post last week mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-t... and more generally.

Let's be clear: the idea that breakfast clubs would adequately mitigate the impact of the two-child limit is absolute bollocks. The average household hit by the two-child limit loses out on roughly £3,800 a year. They're not currently spending that on coco pops.

The Starmer aide/AI stuff feels a bit canary/coalmine because this isn't letting electoral factors triumph over good governance or sinply doing something I don't like - things every government does - this is falling for a scam. There are people in Nunber 10 who are just idiots.

"Utterly delusional" does not even come close. archive.ph/OVHMg

Labour has a real counterattack opportunity if they’re brave enough to take it. More spending, both for public services + defence, using the need to prep the UK for war to justify breaking fiscal rules/tax pledges. Be unequivocal in calling those seeking to undermine the UK traitors and quislings.

Jordan Bardella, the president of France’s hard right National Rally, has cancelled his plans to speak at CPAC after Steve Bannon “proactively made a gesture referring to Nazi ideology.” In other words, Bannon and CPAC are now too extreme for the French extreme right.

The problem is not only those who aim to rule as populists or fascists. The hard question is to address those who want to be ruled by populists or fascists.

ICYMI: Is Trump a Populist or a Fascist? mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-t... Calling Trump a populist alongside people like Johnson or Farage grossly underestimates the threat he represents.

Why A Republican Congress may just roll over for Trump www.vanityfair.com/news/story/t... This is another reason why it may be more accurate to call Trump's government fascist rather than populist mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-t...

New York Governor Kathy Hochul responds to Trump's attempt to force an end to congestion pricing: "I'm here to say, New York hasn't laboured under a king in over 250 years. We sure as hell are not going to start now."

After decades of autocratization (by now) around the world, are there many great examples of "courts saving democracy"? Not really.

Strongly recommend this short discussion on Paul's new substack with Phillips O’Brien about, essentially, Ukraine and the New World Order created by Trump. paulkrugman.substack.com/p/a-belgian-...

Trump has crossed the line and is a fascist. Anyone who thinks he's above the law says it all.👹

People saying that they are shocked, or that Putin is hoodwinking Trump still don't get it. Putin isn't fooling Trump or Trump has not changed his position. He is pro-Putin, he wants Russia to do well and he could not care less about Ukraine (and he hates Zelensky).

"Stewart leaked emails suggesting that [Boris] Johnson had prioritised staff from the animal charity Nowzad for evacuation over more deserving cases."

Ydays post: Is Trump a Populist or a Fascist? mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-t... Trump did everything in his power to overturn the 2020 election result included inciting a mob to invade Congress. This led Finchelstein to suggest that Trump was crossing a line from populism towards fascism.

The rush of the UK right to line up with Trump and Vance ought to cost them now Trump has blamed Ukraine for Russia's invation of it. An issue simple enough for everyone to understand. Terrifying moment though.

USDA says it accidentally fired officials working on bird flu and is trying to rehire them In a statement, an Agriculture Department spokesperson told NBC News that officials are "working to swiftly rectify the situation." www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

Must remember not to check the headlines before going to bed

Even by his god-awful standards, this is one of Trump’s most disgusting press conferences. He’s attacked Zelenskyy, using Kremlin talking points that he only has a 4% approval (LIE). Then, again, Trump blames him & Ukraine for starting the war. THEY. WERE. FUCKING. INVADED.

A cluster of stories on regulation this morning in the FT. First, the UK government's plan to review all regulators to see if they are working to boost growth. A depressing and sterile debate based on the incorrect regulation v growth narrative. www.ft.com/content/f82f...

"The crunch will come when courts find against him.... Will [state machinery] obey the court or Trump? Will enough Republicans in Congress reject what Trump is doing or will they change the laws to make what Trump is doing retrospectively legal, or worse still give him absolute power in law?"

New post: Is Trump a Populist or a Fascist? mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2025/02/is-t... Populism, unlike fascism, can live with democracy in the sense that populists can be ejected from power. Boris Johnson is no longer UK Prime Minister, and more significantly Poland is no longer run by populists.

🧵Who is opposing the Trump administration? I analysed 76 actions of the administration since inauguration and then searched for *meaningful* opposition to each. I grouped the types of opposition and considered what we can learn from both them & actions where opposition has been lacking 1/24

"It is well-known that most of the mainstream media do not approach a Labour Government in a neutral way. Some blatantly misrepresent what is happening, but more often they simply do not report activity, leaving people with a sense that the government is doing nothing."

No rapist left behind

"Anti-migrant politics will not build a single house, staff a single hospital or raise anyone’s wages. Instead, by echoing its rhetoric, the government is simply fuelling the rise of Reform UK" Well done to these Labour MPs, trade unionists, and members. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

More on the recent changes at the CMA. This increasingly looks like a government so keen to attract inward investment that it’s forgotten about the importance of competition in driving innovation and investment. Telling that ministers wanted “control over the narrative “.

So mind numbingly stupid

Those who back the Trump-Musk-Vance administration, or are still giving it the benefit of the doubt, have failed the simplest test of our lifetimes - and the one that really matters. They can't be trusted again.

“Of course we’re fine with GENUINE refugees” #r4today www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
