caravaggio might depend on context - i was taught that he is largely a Renaissance artist, but things like the dramatic lighting he painted with became markers of the Baroque esp since many artists adopted the style after him.
but yes people are def more familiar with the renaissance!!

oh for real. my dad will have the history channel on and i'll catch things like "how did these ancient peoples build this without modern technology? it had to be aliens" and other BS and it's so aggravating. these guys invented fckin calculus and you're using your phone to figure out how much to tip

oh for sure! especially as an art student, referencing past eras and themes and artists in my own work, or seeing how other artists have done so (and always have) was something i always loved. AND to see how art influenced the world or was influenced by it in a broader sense too

that's cool!! tbh there's not a lot i remember from art history (i spent much of those lectures trying to stay awake😂) but there are those couple of artists or art periods that live permanently inside my brain😆

that's totally fair!! she was definitely alive and making art at the time of the later Renaissance era! and i'm sorry if i came off as preachy or obnoxious or anything

i think it's based on the style of painting she used. hers is influenced by Caravaggio, who sorta jump-started the Italian Baroque period at the end of the renaissance era. They both paint with dramatic lighting and deep shadows which are trademarks of the Baroque rather than the Renaissance!

even though some of artemisia's work overlaps with the renaissance, she's generally considered a baroque artist! (she's one of my faves)
