I don’t make a habit of committing carjackings or muggings, but if I did, I would absolutely start yelling “ICE! Homeland Security!” to confuse everyone.

Dying to know where this is, not bc I think it's particularly unusual re: disease but bc she says the staff is good about masking. It's been at least a year since I've seen someone else in a mask where I visit

"Illinois is one of the only states in the Corn Belt that doesn’t place restrictions on corporate purchases of farmland. Short-term leases also disincentivize farmers from growing anything but corn and soybeans the traditional way"

Great reporting from Trib's Karina Atkins on the state of Illinois farmland: less than a 25% of it is owned by the farmers, and corporate dependence on two crops - corn and soybeans - depletes the richness of the soil and pumpis chemicals into earth and river. www.chicagotribune.com/2025/06/01/i...

The FAIR Act has passed through both chambers of the state legislature! Illinois will launch a statewide office of public defense in 2027! This marks the first time Illinois has significantly updated its public defense structure since 1949. endmoneybond.org/2025/05/31/i...

Cancelling South Side is number 1. Changing the name to Max only to change it back to HBO is number 2.

“Expulsion of students in kindergarten through second grade would not be permitted under Lightford’s measure…House Bill 3772 passed the Senate Saturday” www.illinoissenatedemocrats.com/caucus-news/...

A GOP Rep complaining about "pork" in the proposed state budget by choosing as his first and foremost example to start yelling about "a $300k grant to JCFS" is a fascinating choice In These Times.

Probably a good time for people to recognize the wealth class spent billions over decades to create an authoritarian movement on the Right and are now pouring millions into shepherding liberals toward a project that will complement that movement.

The Illinois Senate just voted to pass the FAIR Act! The bill is now headed back to the House for concurrence. Illinois is incredibly close to securing a statewide office of public defense!

The Transit app is trying to fund transit and keep transit workers employed

"And here's the thing that really gets me, the ones who trick the press into calling them 'moderates.' ... There's nothing 'moderate' about caving to Donald Trump every. single. time." It should not be so rare for Dems with a mic to speak truth

Yes to all of this thread Also, none of these things *cause* someone to be a Nazi or kill a quarter million people so far

People are relentlessly saying "The Administration" bc they don't want to say the name of the president and I get it, I do this too but it is making conversations in higher ed incredibly hard to track this could be cleared up if the two behaved differently but I fear we need a language shift

Today, the Illinois Senate has the opportunity to pass the FAIR Act! Learn more about why Illinois needs to create a statewide office of public defense in this great oped: www.dailyherald.com/20250525/col...

Honestly what the fuck, that whole area is thriving and incredibly welcoming and lovely. I know it's the racism but what the FUCK

Happy last day of IL legislative session May you all be standing tall on the wings of our dreams by the time the clock strikes midnight Unless you're doing something bad

Mississippi House leaders used a "demon chipmunk" to read bills at 4x speed after lawmakers, frustrated over getting the legislation for a $7.1 billion budget just before being asked to vote on it, asked to have the bills read aloud. Now, an error lawmakers missed could jeopardize Medicaid funding.

Also, he's not great at that, if you apply some close reading skills to his statements in the article.

US police handcuffs kids and arrests kids. ICE will handcuff immigrant kids.

Every lawyer who voluntarily dismissed cases knowing it'd immediately lead to arrest to circumvent due process should be disbarred. I said what I said.

A 19 year old was shot and killed by CPD in Humboldt Park last night. Reminder that preliminary cop narratives about these incidents are almost always wrong. And yes, it was a tac team. It's been over a year since Dexter Reed was killed and they're still out there.

My high school age son has a classmate just seized by ICE and she is now in a cell in Louisiana, her phone seized. This is High School in the USA in 2025. More Au Revoir Les Enfants than Ferris Bueller. School and community response already in motion.

"[T]he IPDA has joined more than 75 state and local advocacy organizations [to support the FAIR Act]...an essential first step toward adequate funding and effective oversight of the high-quality indigent defense services to which every Illinois resident is entitled. www.shawlocal.com/opinion/2025...

new defamation hypo just dropped

Right, because “asking Google’s AI” for factual answers is worse than asking a Magic 8 Ball. The enshittification of their search means that sometimes you might get accurate results, or you might get what the Plagiarism Autocomplete Tool makes up as plausible-seeming text. IT’S NOT FOR FACTICITY

Michael Burton got pulled over so often near SIU he was scared to drive. Our new investigation in collaboration with @wbez.org shows he’s not alone. Campus cops in Illinois stop and ticket Black drivers way more than white ones. 🔗 Read the full investigation here: www.wbez.org/data/2025/05...

Today has been a long time coming: In the Investigative Project on Race and Equity's latest investigation, our team built on the foundation of our award-winning investigation into Illinois traffic stops to examine racial disparities in traffic stops on college campuses across Illinois.

There are some kinds of AI fails that you should not share if your media company was founded by the British government and this is a great example

Just did an interview that only wanted to talk about Columbia and Harvard where I mentioned the Big Ten at least 4 times to try and show that there is another way to think about our current world

"those people all died WITH govt denials of food and healthcare, not FROM govt denials of food and healthcare"

You don’t have to chew “MAHA” very long before you get to the ooey-gooey eugenicist center.

jesus christ. this is not a time to be creating governmental lists of people with autism

And on the grounds of the Capitol? Come ON

No public money for religious monuments. Sorry, no exceptions. Not even for Da Pope.
