there is no such thing as "healthcare" in jails and prisons. what exists is a cost control service sold to DOCs, which only incidentally provides care to incarcerated ppl. it's "healthcare theater" as a strategy to suppress spending and defang legal challenges www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/heal...

I am sad to share that all Retirement & Disability Research centers have been ordered to stop work. My fellowship will no longer exist, and the work of so many talented researchers and dedicated staff will be cut short. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

“One of Google's examples is asking ‘Did the kids leave their bikes in the driveway again?’ with Gemini reporting back that the kids had left their bikes in the driveway several times this week. Of course, this kind of snitching works with all kinds of toys or belongings from pets or children.”

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

"why can't there be a liberal FOX News" well one reason is that the most progressive people on the best-funded alternatives keep getting fired and replaced by Republicans and insider apologists

This is what I’m on about. As attorneys are getting sanctioned left and right, bar association CLEs are still convincing them it’s okay, if not outright compulsory, to use AI. How is a five figure sanction good for any client’s interests?!

A useful thing that academics and others can do is provide explainers to local media. This is a nice example from my former @mccourtschool.bsky.social colleague Bill Gormley. www.post-gazette.com/opinion/insi...

This is very difficult to read, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen a story feature the perspective of a surviving teacher like this, and it’s so important. “Students called and texted… What their own parents could not fully understand — the worst moment of their lives — Ms. Schamis could.”

This is going to end up costing orders of magnitude more

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

I DRIVE A DODGE STRATUS

Medicaid cuts not only increase arrests & charges but change how cases proceed. By reducing pretrial supports, programming, and sentencing diversion options, cuts could significantly boost the *rate* at which people are sent to jail/prison (not just incoming case #), costing more in money + harm

The GOP is signaling major cuts to Medicaid are coming. Recent studies have shown cuts to Medicaid have a big consequence that gets typically ignored: crime increases. boltsmag.org/medicaid-cov...

Trying to be found, find someone, or avoid walking into someone around a corner at home/indoors: "Echolocation!" Trying to find someone outdoors or in a crowded place: "CAWW, CAWW!" Both require in-kind replies Kids love replying, teens go out of their way to avoid The Caw, adults laugh, all work

Not surprised that it's community colleges that are fighting back. Community colleges serve the greatest number of people facing systemic barriers. A large percentage of community college students are the first in their family to attend college.

conlaw101: Rights granted under the US Constitution are the basement floor. They're not theoretical aspirations and, unlike in many constitutions, they're not rights TO very much, mostly just some rights retained AGAINST the possibility of govt excluding you from basement-floor protections. +

I don’t understand how there’s any debate about whether to characterize them as Nazis when they’re out here sieg heiling. It’s an absolute failure of messaging not to name and condemn this behavior, and build a narrative around it.

💯

I want to say again to academics who are interested in public writing. Look locally. Sure national outlets are good and I do that too, but this kind of visibility in your community can have a real impact.

this is not just ineffective but morally wrong

From a source at NIH, some grants may be nixed because the investigator’s bio sketch mentions DEI-related activities, even if the science itself has nothing to do with it.

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

I don’t know why this is hard for folks to understand. The layoffs aren’t just about probationary employees. They are going beyond that. It won’t stop. It’s all about making agencies non-functional.

In speaking with a friend about the possibility of fear limiting or preventing people’s reactions/responses, I find I’m not ready to say that is what is happening, especially by privileged people, and those in positions of power. Not now, not yet.

wild that UVA called in state troopers bc a few kids set up tents on the lawn but now their own board is openly defying a federal court ruling

I don't know if it's attys telling each other our profession is noble, our fusty costumes/language, our dominance culture, classism, lack of diversity, or what. But it would be nice to end the denial that some of us are indeed 100% real-deal white supremacists www.texasobserver.org/ice-prosecut...
