What you may not have seen is their fundraiser for the Iditarod
www.gofundme.com/f/rerun-kenn...
Running this race is freaking expensive.
I know a lot of you will want to support them, but that would possibly take away money from the Igivearod causes, and we can't have that.

So, from now on until the Widow's Lamp is extinguished, I will send 27USD to RuRun's GoFundMe for every donation you give to any of the Iditarod causes.
No donation money? No problem. Simply signal boost or look at #Igivearod for other ways to give.
DM me with what you did or donated.

So, here is my list of issues with the Iditarod, or more precisely the ITC. It's actually a short list in some ways because everything comes down to accountability and transparency. They do their level best not to have either of those things about any decision the ITC makes about the race. 1/

I know in 2021 the whole route was out and back, so skipping the lollipop loop I'm Anvik and Shageluk should've been possible, but I don't know what the infrastructure of the big loop checkpoints look like. (2/2)

It looks like the total loop adds 329 miles, so taking it out completely would've made it pretty short. But maybe they could've turned the loop around sooner? (1/2)

Thanks! Was avoiding the loop an option that was seriously considered? I don't know what other factors might need to go into planning the route that would make that more or less desirable.

#uglydogs Some data (from a librarian!) that could be used for feedback
I don’t know about you but the arbitrariness and lack of transparency behind the withdrawal decisions doesn’t sit well with me

Thanks for writing this up, Donna! Do you have access to how many mushers were removed each year due to rule 36?
comment in response to

To be fair, the race was changed to the longer course this year to avoid areas with a dangerous lack of snow. This was at mushers' and the fanbase's insistence.

UPDATE: According to the department, more than 1,300 positions will be cut as a result of this reduction in force. Roughly another 600 employees have accepted voluntary resignations or retired.
