Trump is like "Everybody had to listen to me for like 5 days straight. It was great fun. Sure, most of it was because their were horrified or terrified for their finances, but I'll take it." #TrumpSlump

On current polling, and given I assume Lab won't coalition with Reform, the Tories will be able to choose whether to coalition with Labour or Reform. If they choose Lab, Reform voters will just feel even more disenfranchised and angry. Starmer would probably stumble on with a minority govt first.

I reject this analysis. I don't expect less chaos or market manipulation than we saw this week. Nothing has been learned.

If most of the stock traders are going to be such idiots that they overreact to every tariff announcement and unannouncement, then yes, be the counterparty to their stupid bets and profit.

There are entire sectors of the American economy that basically cannot exist with a 104% tariff on China, and more that will be crippled by it. That's even before we get into retaliation, from them or the Europeans or anyone else. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 are up today.

Trump could be in power for 20 years. I don't think even that era will see restored the statues the wokeists tore down in 2020.

You can say very many bad things about the Republican Party, but they do not lack for sincere ideologues! They do a lot of things a party min/maxing their chances of winning elections would not do. Lots of them genuinely believe Donald Trump is a world-historical business genius and statesman!

the basic problem facing american democracy is that one party has decided it wants a king and will hand over as much authority as is necessary to make that happen

it's cool how Donald Trump is simultaneously too dumb to understand how trade works and also just smart enough to maaaaaaaaaybe understand that the bond markets crashing would be like, really really bad

Never seen the “forgive me” version before.

If the firms don’t repudiate the agreements or at least clarify that this is not what’s happening, their principals should face bar discipline

The year is 2027. Tariffs on China are now at 149e11%. The S&P 500 just saw a record one-day increase of 425% --from 11 points to 57--before immediately seeing a record decrease of ∞, to -14. The price of eggs is four hundred billion doge coins.

This is a really dumb idea. You have to make Republicans own the pain they're causing, not take partial ownership of it yourself. There's no political upside here. If Republicans want to do this, give them your votes in exchange for massive concessions. Otherwise no.

Seems like it would be hard for the IRS to force you to pay taxes if you are legally a zombie bsky.app/profile/josh...

What most Americans want is a president who can, most days, be completely ignored. Trump wants your attention at least a few times a week and he will reach for ever more outlandish claims, policies and gimmicks to get it. Is this what you voted for?

Having cheap public transport, free healthcare, free education etc, Europeans find it impossible to imagine how much average Americans lose when they are short of money or lose their jobs.

Interesting to speculate what de facto Dollarized GCC economies do if the dollar really falls... Do they start pricing oil exports in Euros?

A 50% fall in the S&P 500 would infuriate 80% of US voters, but really it would be a return to sanity after a ridiculously long bull market, and that would reflect the shaky economic fundamentals of 10 days ago, and not the catastrophic ones of today. So a 60% fall would be a proper reset.

I just realized, the USA has become Millwall FC bsky.app/profile/glol...
