Great, handy that this happened at same time as our NZ Perm Residency paperwork. World just keeps getting better and better (sarcastic). American and returning to USA for immediate future. We will fight to undo the damage and, then begin (again) to try to improve it. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/w...

PSA: Are you age 50 or older? In late 2024, CDC came out with new recommendation that adults as young as age 50 get the pneumococcal vaccine (it used to be recommended for age 65+). This is NOT an annual vaccine. Get it once! Of course, check with your doctor, etc. www.nytimes.com/2024/10/25/w...

As tempting as it is to flee the US to Aotearoa / NZ or Portugal or Canada or wherever, you can't completely escape Trump's chaos with global security & global economy. However, Aotearoa is gorgeous, the people are kind, and hopefully it will not follow MAGA lead. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...

And they’re going to turn it into an “everytown for gun safety” website. This might be the most brilliant troll job in history.

I forgot I ordered this from #TheNation before the election. It arrived today to rub salt in the wounds. 😢 At least it is only 500 pieces. Ugh. But hey, I know we can come back from this. Let me just bury myself in a painful jigsaw puzzle for a minute.

This is an important thing to remember. The harm won’t be evenly distributed. Mostly things will go on as usual, unless (and until) you’re a target. We can see this here in Aotearoa. The govt is diligently stripping rights and protections from Māori, from the disabled, from beneficiaries.

I rarely bring it up anymore (IDK why, it feels weird to promote??) but feels sadly/newly relevant again: If you're thinking about running for office, I wrote a book for you. www.simonandschuster.com/books/Run-fo...

One piece of early Twitter etiquette that would be a good addition to the culture here is the use of “h/t” acknowledgements. H/t means “hat tip” and is a way of giving credit to the account where you first saw the content you’re promoting. It’s a great network building tool and feels good as well.

It’s really pretty cool that one thing you can do to support people you like is ask your local library to get their book because it doesn’t cost you anything, it helps them, and the librarian gets to know someone actually wants to read a book and not just use the computer for Roblox

I know everyone says this, but the amount of STUFF libraries have available digitally is just breathtaking. My library system here in Baton Rouge has thousands of Udemy courses available. And they're free! They're so free. Libraries are cool. Librarians are cool. Support your libraries.

for anyone trying to extricate yourself from the clutches of Amazon: bookstores make more than a third of their money between now & New Year’s, & most bookstores ship nationwide 💌

I'm terribly awkward at online interactions (you'd love me in person) but I'm learning. One thing I do think I can help with is draw attention to Diane Ravitch's arrival. She had 144K on loser site. See below & repost! Put her on a starter kit! #resist #blue #education @dianeravitch.bsky.social‬

I just joined BlueSky, leaving Twitter. I waited so long because I have 144k followers there. 0 here. I write about education and democracy. I got tired of being slammed on Twitter by Nazis. Thanks for following.

Such a good piece. Read it. Make time to sit with it. And then keep planning.

Hey new users— we’ve been trying to build a strong culture of expecting alt text. Take it from me, because I’ve heard from them: there are blind people on this app and they appreciate being included. You can also turn on a setting that prevents you from posting images without it, if you forget

This is a photograph of my great uncle, Jim Ida, in 1942. The photograph was taken by Dorothea Lange as part of her documentation of the Japanese American incarceration. He is sitting with his family’s bags, waiting to be taken to an internment camp. (Tanforan, I believe.) He was 17.
