Yes, you send in information on bats you have on your property. The other issue is that the insect population is way down, we used to have nesting swallows, but this year, there are none. Normally, we have a lot of mosquitos, but those numbers are down too, along with bees and other insects.

Making doctors take on more patients and increasing the number of patients they see in a day won't make up for a shortage of doctors. Fixing our Canadian medical system must be a priority. Maybe it should be federal with new legislation that will ensure it is properly funded.

I agree. Maybe it should be a federal healthcare system with some really good legislation to protect the funds.

It's so ironic considering millions of trees were lost to the mountain pine beetle back in the 90's due to monoculure. 18 million hectares were affected. There were dead pines everywhere here in BC. It was awful, miles of brown forest. Amazingly, some of the dead trees are still standing.

There's a regional office in Vancouver. I'll call them tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Yes, it's Canadian. They are supposed to promote completion and protect consumers.

If Canada is so awful, perhaps America would be more to Skippy's liking.

I have 2 rescue dogs. People have no choice when it comes to vet care. These corporations know this and take advantage. The competition Act is supposed to protect us from this.

How can that happen? Why don't they have to account for how and why that money went to a for-profit?

Me too. Some areas are annually sprayed. Why are we so determined to poison our back country? It's so frustrating. It's done for the convenience of the big forestry companies. No one cares that the deciduous trees help slow down forest fires as they contain more water than the conifers.
comment in response to
post
Here in the B.C. they still spray it on clearcuts. Some are even sprayed annually with glyphosate. The deciduous trees contain more water and do not burn ad easily as conifer. We should be creating firebreaks with deciduous trees, not spraying a toxic substance to prevent them growing.

I never thought of that, good idea. Actually, it's a pity it's not the 80's it more sane back then.

Avoided the smoke here in BC so far. Just had some lightning up this way, came with heavy rain, so I'm hoping no more fires get started.

If you can keep the tick, it helps determine the species and what diseases it might be carrying.

We have a friend with Lyme. It took forever to diagnose. By that time, it was causing lots of health issues. She was infected several years ago, too. Doctors still rely on symptoms, tick exposure, and sometimes blood work. It's a good idea to keep the tick if possible, to ID the species.
comment in response to

The sooner we have a Lyme disease vaccine the better. The warming planet means ticks spreading to more areas. That will mean more Lyme cases. Several provinces are experiencing increased numbers of ticks.

Empty promises, there must be a way to stop this type of behavior. We fork over our tax money like good citizens, politicians need to keep their promises like trustworthy people.

We've known the misuse of antibiotics in farm animals causes resistance to these drugs for years. Intensive animal farming made it worse. We need to go back to more small farms where disease is less likely to spread and manure can be recycled as fertilizer without poisoning local water systems.

Isn't Skippy the guy who spent more than the P.M.? $8.832 million comes to mind, compared to Trudeau's $4.194 million. More than double. Can you say hypocrite?

Canadian steel products should play a major part in fireproofing rural properties. Embers are the cause of most structural buildings during forest fires. Steel roofs and siding properly applied help protect flammable materials in buildings. Steel outbuildings also reduce risk.

I worry what it will be like for youngsters in 5 or 10 years. This is just the beginning of extreme weather events and how they will affect us. We need to find a way to make climate change the #1 priority.

Our medical system crumbles while senators get to spend $118,000 on a familiarization tour of Alberta. It would seem government policies on where and how to spend taxpayer money doesn't really line up with the expectations of us taxpayers.

Selenium releases slowly from sediments and waste rocks, so selenium poisoning of water bodies can last for decades or longer. The selenium accumulates in both invertebrates and aquatic plants, which in turn poisons the fish. Alberta isn't fixing Crowsnest, but more coal mines are planned.

It is. They should never have made CP a crown corporation. They knew there was no expectation of profit. Political games as usual I guess.

Most of my bat population is disappearing, I think it's the wide temperature changes we get now, along with declining insect numbers. Young bats are quite sensitive to temperature change as they can't regulate body temperature. Actually our young ones will be later as I'm in the Interior.

Had a long chat with my vet about this 2 weeks ago. Sounds like they are buying up everything, specialized foods, animal medications etc. It's a few companies creating a monopoly. New vets can get around $80,000 bonus. They buy up vet clinics for more than they're worth, no vet can compete.

Failing to give all Canadian kids a great education is why China is miles ahead of us. They don't have a shortage of skilled workers at every level. Underfunding education doesn't make any sense.
comment in response to

This is what happens when corporations buy up all the vet clinics. They then give bonuses to new vets when they finish school along with a contract. Unfortunately, many leave the profession after their contract, working conditions are not great. Where are our anti-trust laws to stop this?

I get small items from Canada Post at our community mailbox. None of the big companies deliver to my home, some not too large stuff, I can pick up at the Canada Post Office. There are drop-off locations in the nearest small , that is, a drive of about hour and 40 minutes, round trip.

So far, my area of the interior is smoke-free. We could get lightning tomorrow. Hopefully, the weatherman is wrong, or it comes with a lot of rain.
