That sounds like it'd be illegal in Canada. Technically health care isn't free there (it's paid for by taxes), but I'm still shocked it's happening even in Alberta.

I wrote an essay/blog post about this a while back if you're interested. The infrastructure of the USA isn't conducive to massive gatherings like what you're talking about. That being said, I agree that the situation merits much more massive protests.

Just came across this, but one reason is that it's hard to do so in a car-dependent area (which most of the USA qualifies as). The way our suburbs are set up also atomizes the population so that people don't know each other as well. That's not necessarily exclusive to America, but it's worse here.

I'm not sure if we have much to compare it to without knowing how fully booked most DC-area hotels are this time of year (with the caveat that international tourism has declined a good bit).
