23.02.1935 | Deddie Zak’s name tag was found on June 8, 2013, at the site of one of Sobibor’s crematoria. The tag had been burned. Deddie and his parents Simon and Judith Zak-Vleeschouwer were part of the mass deportation of Jewish children from KZ Vught via Westerbork on June 7, 1943.

23.02.1880 | Laura Eisenschimlová-Schwimmerová was born in Vienna as the daughter of Adolf Schwimmer and Julia Borger. Laura married the merchant Ignaz Eisenschiml in Vienna in 1918. Their last address was in Prague. Via Theresienstadt, they were deported to Sobibor and murdered in May 1942. 👇🏼 1/3

22.02.1909 | Alexander 'Sasha' Pechersky, son of a Jewish lawyer, was born in Kremenchuk. In late Septe. 1943, a transport from Minsk arrived in Sobibor. Among them was Pechersky, who survived selection. Without Pechersky, the Oct. 14, 1943 uprising in Sobibor would not have happened. Who was he?

17.02.1935 | Johan Eric Polak was born in Winschoten. Before WWII, Winschoten had the largest Jewish community in the Netherlands after Amsterdam. He lived at Enckevoirstraat 12 in Den Bosch from Sept. 1941 and before at the H.J. Engelkenslaan. Johan was murdered in Sobibor on July 2, 1943. 👇🏼1/5

16.02.1930 | Dagobert Levy was born in Nordenham (D) and grew up in Eygelshoven (NL), where he came to live in 1934. His father was a sales agent in textiles. On April 9, 1943, they had to go to Vught. On June 6, 1943, Dagobert & his parents were deported via Westerbork to Sobibor and murdered.👇🏼1/2

15.02.1907 | Sobibor survivor Sal Paull (Shlomo Podchlebnik) was born in Kolo, as the son of Bezalel/Calel Podchlebnik & Ruchla Laia Wydawska. Before WW2, he lived on Kowalska Street in Lublin. In Sobibor he had to dig wells, and frequently got outside the camp's fence. He escaped in July 1943. 👇🏼1/5

15.02.1925 | Sara Cohen was born 100 years ago in Oldenzaal. She grew up in the Kerkstraat. Her father had a butcher shop on the Grootestraat and also a laundry and ironing shop on the Marktstraat. Joël Cohen was also Chazan of the Synagogue in Oldenzaal and a member of the Jewish Council. 👇🏼1/3

14.02.1908 | Heiman Philip Leefsma was a son of Gerrit Leefsma & Reina van Dam. They sold men's clothing in their store at Lindegracht 13 in Heerenveen. In 1939 Heiman moved with his parents to Asterstraat 17. From April 16, 1943 Heiman was in Westerbork and 7 days later he was murdered in #Sobibor.

11.02.1902 | Remembering Lena Fransman. She had 9 siblings, of whom only Margaretha survived Bergen-Belsen. She and her brother Lehman sold threads and ribbon on Uilenburg. Lena lived with her husband and son at Krugerplein 36 in Amsterdam. She was murdered in #Sobibor.👇🏼1/4

08.02.1925 | Lotte Adler, along with her sister Henny, came to the Netherlands from Frankfurt am Main after Kristallnacht end of 1938. These Childrens transports were organized to bring Jewish children from Germany to safety. Lotte was murdered in Sobibor in March 1943. 👇🏼1/6

04.02.1926 | Bram Hamel was born in Hilversum. He was a cheerful boy who, according to his brother, was as unaware as we all were of the horrors to come. After more than six months of hiding in Doorn, he was arrested by the Germans due to treason and sent to Sobibor in July 1943. 👇🏼1/6

02.02.1911 | Diamond cutter Debora Philipse-Reiss was a daughter of Jacob Reiss and Grietje Lap. She had 2 brothers, Marcus and Harry, both men survived the war. Debora was murdered with her husband Samuel in #Sobibor. Their son Rudy survived the Holocaust by going into hiding. 👇🏼 1/3

31.01.1925 | Of Gerrit Schellevis we have only a child's photograph. Gerrit worked in a warehouse. He lived with his family at Batavisatraat 40-1 and from 1940 at Vrolikstraat 203-II in Amsterdam. Separated from his family, he was deported to #Sobibor at the end of May 1943. 👇🏼1/4

Op de Internationale Herdenkingsdag voor de Holocaust delen we op Spotify een gesprek uit 1962 van Sophia Engelsman-Huisman met haar man, waarin ze voor sprak over haar ervaringen in 11 kampen en de Holocaust. Sophia was één van de 18 Nederlandse overlevenden van het vernietigingskamp Sobibor.
