There's an interesting thing noted with cigarettes: smokers are less likely to develop both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. For a long time people wondered how smoking protects from these diseases. Does nicotine reduce the risk? Etc Turns out, smokers just die before getting old enough.

Massachusetts in general (and Maura Healey in particular) offers proof positive that Democrats are what people think Republicans are. Republicans are usually far worse! Running to try to keep up with the Overton Window…

It’s incredible to live in a place with lots of smart people trying their hardest to prepare for what we imagine might be coming in terms of excessive rainfall and extreme weather… go #Somerville!

“It’s absurd for anyone to insinuate that this president is profiting off of the presidency,” @PressSec said, before Trump headed to his golf club to dine with 220 people who bought his memecoin, which generates fees for a Trump business entity.

Not many people know this, but the song 8675309 is actually threatening people who live in the zip code 75309

The Grok thing is a perfect lesson, really, about how ai "tools" will absolutely reflect and echo the ideological priorities and weird obsessions of its owners

I'll just take this moment to point out that the US Institute of Peace, just a few weeks ago, contained one of the finest concentrations of US expertise on India and Pakistan, and crisis management in South Asia.

Authoritarians love "Gen AI" because it - Sounds confident even when factually wrong - Broadly conforms to & reproduces their biases, off the shelf - Lets them create bespoke realities (text, audio, moving & still image) which agree w/ their biases - Degrades trust in knowledge/evidence/expertise…

while it might seem like a lot of turnover at the top of DoD, the way merit works is you just keep firing people until you find the best ones

Here's Palantir's Louis Mosley, grandson of Britain's most famous fascist leader, talking about the importance of AI, if you aren't convinced yet that this is one big co-ordinated push towards the destruction of everything good in life. www.politicshome.com/news/article...

For no particular reason, I find myself thinking of the opening scenes from Terry Gilliam's 1985 film “Brazil”. Due to a bug introduced by a careless bureaucrat, a government computer prints the wrong man’s name on a list of wanted terrorists: “BUTTLE” instead of “TUTTLE,” off by a single letter… +

I’m so grateful for the careful thinking & writing that @eryk.bsky.social is doing about #LLMs and “stable diffusion” image generation — blithely referred to as “ #AI” in the current discourse. I was struck by his response to the common objection “But that’s not A.I., that’s capitalism!” Indeed!

Harvard is older than the United States and at this rate has a decent shot of outliving it too

If you are National Guard or active duty military & you are ordered to violate the Constitutional rights of your fellow Americans, call the Gl Rights Hotline 1-877-447-4487 There is support, you don't have to go through with it.

the only way kidnapping and illegally detaining lawful permanent residents (or citizens!) in foreign concentration camps "plays out" is we all live our lives under fascism or the fascists are jailed and many of them executed. that's it. read a fuckin book.

I was today years old when I learned that the person in charge of the #NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau – Rebecca Weiner – is ALSO adjunct professor at Columbia University, from which perches she helped direct the crackdown on student protest. She’s also liaison to NYPD Tel Aviv bureau! archive.is/uUOMS

Haha, yes get in your japes and wisecracks about “the reporter from MyPillow.” But that is the senior White House reporter from MyPillow, show some respect.

Taking my basic understanding of this situation from @nescio13.bsky.social 's analysis continues to pan out.

everyone's least-favorite bespectacled cryptids getting yet another national media profile the very same day a vox reporter is telling us to go read liz fucking bruenig's "why liberals should embrace pro-natalism" atlantic piece is just... insultingly unsubtle
