It is so offensive when President Cutrer and Chancellor Garcia talk about non-majors being "not impacted" by elimination of other programs. These leaders completely misunderstand how colleges work. "The main contribution of the Women’s Studies program...has been to the wider campus and community..."

From the February 21st legislative hearings on the future of #SSU -- Assembly member Damon Connolly, who represents SSU in the state Assembly:

State Senator Mike McGuire: "Sonoma State is not corporate America....Simply cutting your way out of this isn't going to be successful."

"The CSU Systems Administrators did not count on the huge and growing grass roots reactions to the take-it-or-leave-it dictate crudely delivered by email to faculty, staff and students."

The problem is that the CSU has mismanaged Sonoma State -- the CSU sends the Presidents responsible for marketing, not the faculty -- and then punishes SSU for the CSU's own mismanagement “It is unacceptable that there have been three presidents in three years,” State Senator Mike McGuire said.

This is from the legislative hearings on the future of #SonomaState, held February 21, 2025. The congressman who has represented this campus "forever" understands #SSU better than the CSU system itself does. The rot at the CSU system goes all the way to the top, and the legislature must intervene.

SSU's recovery plan must focus on (1) messaging the campus's unique facility, (2) delivering a unique liberal arts leadership development experience, and (3) removing barriers to entry below, especially the 6-unit cliff that makes it expensive to go part time. #SSU should be the pilot for a change.

Sonoma County Supervisor Chris Coursey at the February 21 legislative hearing on the future of Sonoma State. The CSU is completely out of step with local and state leadership.

It is important for everyone to keep in mind that the big #SSU PLAN that everyone is waiting for will be written by the same person who created the last plan. That's a recipe for disaster, and others must offer competing plans, ideally before the President Cutrer's plan is released. #SonomaState

Congress member Mike Thompson is a CSU graduate, and his wife has a degree from #SSU. He knows what Chancellor Garcia does not know, which is the importance of this campus to everyone.

“The Chancellor’s Office as well as administrators at Sonoma State must acknowledge their failure and mishandling of the university’s budget and the budget-cut rollout.”

This exchange between CA Assembly member Chris Rogers and CSU Chancellor Garcia: Garcia: "The President is putting together a plan that will be shared with all of you in the near future. Rogers: "Are we going to be a part of creating that plan?" Garcia: "She will share that plan with you."

Senator Mike McGuire: "We need to be able to see a comeback plan. It's up to the University and it's up to the CSU System to develop that comeback plan. We are prepared to invest. But what are we investing in?...Simply cutting your way out of this isn't going to be successful."

From the February 21st legislative hearings on the future of #SonomaState

"Legislators Damon, Cabaldon and McGuire kept the forum open until the last person in line had spoken— two hours after the scheduled end time."

From the February 21st legislative hearings on the future of #SSU:

The #SSU Crier will be publishing highlights from the February 21 Legislative Hearings on the SSU Budget Crisis.

At yesterday's legislative hearing, SSU faculty had their own George Bailey moment, when a long stream of SSU alumni told the legislators how their time at SSU had changed their lives for the better, and how important it was for future students to have the same opportunity.

THANK YOU LEGISLATORS!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!! YOUR CONSTITUENTS COULD NOT BE MORE GRATEFUL!!!! [Anyone who did not watch the legislative hearings on SSU will want to do so. I've never seen anything like it in my life.]

One way to watch the legislative hearing is to click here and scroll down the page. It is mislabeled as "February 18" sd03.senate.ca.gov

You mean not everyone can still sing by heart the preamble to "The Constitution"?

"During her time as chancellor, García has demonstrated serious disregard for the well-being of the CSU community. Wave after wave of self-serving managerial decisions have culminated in the loss of educational opportunities across the state."

“I want to see the CSU system and Sonoma State step up to provide in writing to this community what the comeback plan is." He wants to see a draft within 30 and no later than 60 days. “We cannot leave that hearing without a commitment to a turnaround plan for this university. Full stop.“

Question for legislators tomorrow: How can California afford to cut higher education by 8%? Who thinks we need less higher education than in the past? Why? Don't we need to invest in higher education more now than ever? Don't investments in higher education pay off in the long run?

We must all cover our part of the field, which for Crier readers is not just saving higher education, but restoring it to its former glory.

Friday February 21st, 2pm, SSU Student Center: Legislature must fully fund higher education in California, like we used to. California needs higher education more than ever, and so does our misinformation saturated world.

"Years of fiscal mismanagement by temporary administrators with few ties to the community have driven our university to the brink....In the late 1990s, when enrollment was below 6,000 students, the university had more faculty and the same number of academic programs..." #SonomaState #SSU

I love that #SSU's athletes took on this fight. They are trained warriors in a way that the Dance, Philosophy, and Art History students are not. But if they get a chance to save Athletics but let the rest of the college go down, we'll find out what these athletes are really made of.
