NEW: Researchers found forensic evidence of Paragon's spyware on the iPhones of two journalists. One is Ciro Pellegrino, who works for @fanpage.it. The other is an unnamed prominent European journalist. Looks like the spyware scandal that for now has focused on Italy may expand further in Europe.

Scruffa brings joy to your timeline!

Breaking @propublica.org: Bukele of El Salvador has become one of Trump’s favorite authoritarians, and Trump touts him as a foe of MS-13. But a US investigation has found evidence he has colluded with the gang, even paying it for votes. www.propublica.org/article/buke...

I first heard of amateur #RadioAstronomy 20+ yrs ago and thought, WHOA these guys are badass. I gave a tour to the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers ~15 yrs ago and thought, wow, this group is fun. I just wrapped up my 1st conference w/ SARA and I freaking loved it. www.radio-astronomy.org 🔭📡

The cruelty in today's politics feels horribly corrosive. Bringing up that hard-working immigrant families — undocumented, yes, but not violent criminals — are being ripped apart based on immigration status doesn't bring compassion or even pause, but gleeful cheers.

We have lost all contact with our UNRWA colleagues in Gaza, communications have been cut off. This morning, for the first time in months, we did not receive their morning messages to say, "good morning" and "we are fine/alive". We anxiously await to hear from our colleagues.

In America's execution chambers, Elizabeth Bruenig has watched three men die. Stephanie Bai interviewed her about the twin impulses of mercy and revenge, and why, when sitting across from a man on the cusp of death, she chose not to look away.

I just discovered a hidden gem on YouTube, "It came from the manga," a channel where translator Nicholas Theisen performs dramatic English language readings of pre-WW2 manga. This is a clip from Sho-chan Adventures. It currently has only 174 subscribers - but it deserves more!

This episode was one of the best of DS9. And I wonder if it had a message for those who are mere filing clerks in similarly oppressive regimes.

Very excited for this piece with @ianshapiro.bsky.social to be forthcoming at Political Behavior! In it, we show --- using Twitter data, panel-survey data, and a survey experiment --- that the real beating heart of election denialism in 2020 was white racism papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Pope Leo’s first US episcopal appointment, San Diego’s Bishop-designate Pham, a Vietnamese refugee, invites priests and faith leaders to “stand in solidarity”with migrants at courthouse on June 20, as they make court appearances.

A German court recently ruled that fossil fuel producers could be held account for the climate harms they caused but the decision was initially written up as a win for German energy giant RWE. Here's my look at what this landmark legal decision actually said for @drilledmedia.bsky.social.

Yoooooo this rules!!! I was afraid that Seven Seas had abandoned Lodoss, happy to hear they're doing an audio book of the original first novel!

Our community is overwhelmingly powerful now. We need to come together to be a positive influence on the world. We cannot allow the people along the fringes become radicalized. But how?

Dealing with law enforcement can be stressful, so it’s important to know your rights before you’re face-to-face with ICE agents. While there’s never any guarantee that law enforcement officers will follow the law, here’s what they can and can’t legally do to you and what you can legally demand. ⤵️

Still mad—and with good reason. Today is the release date for the audiobook of HOW TO GO MAD WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND: MADNESS AND BLACK RADICAL CREATIVITY. I'm grateful to @dukepress.bsky.social for continued investment in my work, even four years after initial publication.

TIL Pedestrian Man is an actual thing.

I promise to question everything my leaders tell me. I promise to use my critical faculties. I promise to develop my independence of thought. I promise to educate myself so I can make my own judgements. - Carl Sagan

The Edgar is thought to be an Indigenous haircut. It’s an act of pride and radical self-love, especially looking at the environment the haircut is being done.

I’m having trouble being joyful and not a shaking ball of anxiety. And maybe this might help?

Florida child welfare officers found a 17-year-old living in a shed with no food or water. They sent him to a foster home... and then reported him to ICE, whereupon he was handcuffed and shackled and marched to detention. Not only is that victimizing him again, it violates Florida's own rules.

Listen to the simple tailor. If I’m going to be added to some ICE list for a Star Trek post, it should be this one.

Watch for accelerationists and bad faith actors who seek to sabotage movements.

Sarah Stillman investigates a widespread crisis of deaths by starvation in America’s county jails. Most of the victims she identified had been arrested in the midst of a mental-health crisis, often on petty charges tied to their psychiatric distress.

This is beyond evil. My blood would boil if my womb didn’t feel heartbroken on their behalf. These are monsters.

These ICE protests aren't just protests. They are direct actions, with strategy behind them calculated to protect our neighbors and loved ones from kidnapping and torture. Activists are debating and experimenting with and fine-tuning tactics with the goal of disrupting and delaying ICE trafficking.

TIL that Diego Luna was a Zapatista??? BRO

Periodic reminder that every day is STFU Friday Also, sharing the location of cops in the public performance of their jobs is ironclad First Amendment-protected expression If you're concerned something you've said has you on the Government's radar, call your lawyer instead of posting through it

It looks like the Trump administration seeks to weaken the academe to such an extent that it becomes an arm of the administration’s machinations.

Will this lead to expensive weather subscriptions? $50 a month to get your daily forecast. $600 a year for comprehensive hurricane season information? $100 a month to get emergency weather alerts, including tornado and thunderstorm warnings?
