That is pretty common for embedded ARM networking gear. The serial console is often exposed that way, from my experience, particularly on what I would consider higher quality hosts. Agreed it is odd for a switch of any appreciable port count.

From my perspective, it is not a problem for me; I get lots of emails at all hours. For those whose email goes to their phone, and causes a notification, I can see how that could be potentially disturbing, maybe? For what it is worth, I have never heard of such a complaint before.

I work odd hours as well, and often with people distributed across the planet, so time zones vary greatly. You can't please everyone... A technical solution to this might involve a measure to queue the mail you send for delivery at open of business, instead of immediately?
