the red death costume in the film is so underwhelming š the way the mask moves and talks in the stage version is so fucking cool

the way lydia is frozen under the red death's stare was inspired by the 1904 etching "Hypnosis" by Sascha Schneider.
you may also recognize it from Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse.

the mysterious figure in red.
the red death.

"By order of Prince Prospero, guests cannot wear red to the masquerade."
just who IS prince prospero?? in Masque of the Red Death, prospero rules over a castle where he holds lavish parties while a plague known as the red death wipes out the population outside of the castle. he's a dick.

masquerades!!!
the mysterious figure dressed as the Red Death intrudes on the masquerade ball, appearing ominously at the top of the staircase. both in Phantom of the Opera and in my comic, this is a reference to Poe's Masque of the Red Death.

besides the costumes, i made a few more gothic horror references so here's a mini thread for those interested š
when lydia thinks BJ is wearing a Phantom costume, she quotes Phantom of the Opera lyrics, then later on she's somewhat hypnotized by this mysterious figure beckoning her.

that first lydia went through a bunch of different designs before i decided on the helena dressā¦i really wanted the striped leggings to work but i think they'd look better in another illustration
