Most significant part of the deal will be public opinion. If RW press can't stir anti EU sentiment, the Brexit game is up and momentum will make the relationship ever closer. RW press will now be rabid but I doubt the population care.

Personally, the greatest cost was losing any feeling of nationality. Lost job didn't bother finding another in the UK, so I retired at 46 and moved family to Spain. Still find no meaningful connection to UK.

My Italian grandfather arrived in UK in his 20's worked in Italian kitchens as a chef until he retired at 89 and spoke virtually no English. So the answer to your question is it depends on the circumstances.
