Federal funding is about so much more than money to do research. It motivates me to think deeply about how my research moves beyond sating my scientific curiosity, and how it can concretely benefit students, my local community, and the taxpaying public. Public service is motivating and fulfilling.

There are private foundations and industry avenues to fund research, but these are not going to fill the gap or be able to step in to replace lost government stability and support for scientific progress.

Applying for these grants is time consuming and challenging. Funding rates are low, but the stability and trust in government support for science has been a foundation for my career, and many others. It feels disorienting to find unstable footing and worry about the risk of broken contracts.

My current role as an ecological researcher & tenured data analytics prof has also been supported by multiple NSF grants. These have been SO impactful, not just to me, but to the students & trainees to whom they have provided funding + scientific opportunities that otherwise would not have existed.

I attended graduate school supported as a research assistant on multiple NSF grants held by my grad school advisors, and later was able to continue pursuing research as a NSF-funded postdoc, when I otherwise might have given up to pursue a more steady income and a place to settle down to live.

These thoughtless and ineffective mass layoffs and budget cuts will leave a giant and long lasting gap in our country's ability to be competitive, the public trust in science and policy, and create greater divides between the rich and the poor.

BEDE Network has liased with other RCN-UBE projects over the years & interacted with *hundreds* of undergrad biology instructors since 2019 for training, curricular plans, + research on the DS+BIOL landscape. Other RCNs have similar reach; an effective use funds. qubeshub.org/community/gr...

It's hard to know anything at this point. My understanding was that RCN-UBE was successful & slated to continue until very recently. Goals of the program include innovations in education, best practices, interdisciplinarity, workforce preparation, & creating an engaging learning environment for all.

Full disclosure: I am coPI on an already funded RCN-UBE, the BEDE Network. This mean's I've seen firsthand how these groups have been able to work together to advance their goals, improve educational outcomes, and create meaningful and far reaching teacher-scholar networks across the United States.

The list of recent RCN-UBE awards shows how important this work is: Most undergraduates in biology will not go on to work in academia -- BUT wherever they go to college or end up in their careers, they need skills in data science, AI, communication, and entrepreneurship. www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...

Projects like those funded by RCN-UBE are highly impactful to the STEM research and teaching landscape. They provide direct resources, training, and curriculum to a much larger number of people than a typical research grant, and frequently have impacts beyond the "ivory tower".

You can register for the June 2025 BEDE Network meeting here. I'm also happy to chat more or answer any questions. Please share broadly! docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

For more information about BEDE Network, visit our QUBES Hub site. It's free to join, and we have a great community of folks! qubeshub.org/community/gr... There are opportunities to join our meeting in person, virtually, or you can join a working group for research on DS+Biology education!

No definition of DEIA is given, no guidance on what is "allowed" or disallowed. Imagine being so afraid of an idea that you had to make it retroactively illegal.

I don't think the PRFB is gone, but the focal area has changed from 2024 to 2025 for "solutions for a resilient planet". Pretty sure that explains the linked page, not that the whole postdoc program is canceled. new.nsf.gov/funding/info...
